WWF Saturday Night's Main Event April 27th, 1991 Edition Review

Saturday Night's Main Event XXV | Pro Wrestling | Fandom

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that is in more hot water than Velveteen Dream! It’s time for Saturday Night’s Main Event and sadly, this is one of the last ones for a while as we won’t be seeing this until around Wrestlemania. Some have been great, others have been awful but I would not change viewing them for a second. So what do we have here? Well, it’s time for a 20-Man Battle Royal as well as The Ultimate Warrior looking to take out Sgt. Slaughter as well as The Nasty Boys defending their WWF Tag Team Championships against The Bushwhackers.

Sgt. Slaughter W/ Colonel Mustafa & General Adnan vs The Ultimate Warrior

What has changed? Rematch time as Slaughter takes on Warrior, Randy Savage is on commentary due to his career ending. We start with Warrior slamming Slaughter to the mat, clothesline and back body drop. Slaughter is punched to the floor, massive right in the aisleway. Back to the ring, Slaughter is begging for mercy. Eye poke by Slaughter, Slaughter tosses Warrior to the floor. Mustafa attacks Warrior before Slaughter assumes control, axe handles to the spine. Warrior is rammed into the ring apron, Slaughter continues to punish Warrior. Gut-buster from Slaughter, whip off the ropes and Slaughter applies the bearhug.

Mustafa is happy with the work of Slaughter, Warrior breaks free and lands a scoop slam. Warrior collapses to the mat in pain, Slaughter goes right to the spine. Bearhug once more, Paul Bearer comes to ringside with the coffin that Warrior was placed in by The Undertaker. Warrior breaks free from Slaughter’s grip but Warrior eyes up that coffin as Bearer stares a whole through Warrior. Warrior is clotheslined to the floor by Slaughter, Slaughter lands blow after blow but Warrior is shaking it all off. Right hands and clotheslines for Slaughter, flying shoulder block but Bearer opens the coffin and Undertaker is inside. Warrior and Undertaker lock eyes, Slaughter lands a blow on Warrior. Mustafa, Adnan Slaughter and Undertaker demolish Ultimate Warrior.

Man, they were high on Undertaker from the get-go, The Man From The Darkside has Warrior and Hogan backing up in fear, The Undertaker could be taking down two of the strongest forces in the WWF without so much as breaking a sweat. Warrior lands clothesline after clothesline on Undertaker and Taker takes it all in, The Undertaker has his eyes set on Warrior and this could be quite the match.

Winner: Ultimate Warrior over Sgt. Slaughter via DQ!

(WWF World Tag Team Championship Match) The Nasty Boys © W/ Jimmy Hart vs The Bushwhackers

Butch & Luke have a shot at winning tag team gold against the newly crowned champions in The Nasty Boys. Luke and Knobbs, knees by Knobbs in the corner. Elbows and forearms, Luke dodges and pummels Knobbs before Knobbs cowers in the corner. Boot and right hands by Knobbs, shoulder thrusts in the corner. Luke reverses an Irish whip, rights and lefts by Luke. Butch saves Luke from a cheap shot, Knobbs and Sags are whipped into one another and knocked down with double clotheslines. Sags poses for the fans as Butch poses too, Sags attacks Butch from behind with a massive forearm.

Sags whips Butch, reversal by Butch. Knee to the gut and a knee-lift, running clothesline from Luke for two. Knobbs saves the match, Sags and Knobbs eat Battering Rams as The Bushwhackers are in firm control. Luke is whipped off the ropes and Knobbs nails Luke with a kick to the head, Sags steps on the head of Luke. Multiple elbow drops from Sags, tag to Knobbs who quickly tags Sags who hits a big elbow but Butch makes the save. Whip to the buckle, Luke dodges Sags.

Luke tags Butch, Sags tags Knobbs. Rights and lefts, massive clotheslines from Butch to both Nasty Boys. Cover with Sags saving the match, Luke is with the referee. Sags interferes illegally, Butch eats a clothesline from Knobbs. Luke saves the match, a near-fall for Bushwhackers as Luke trips Knobbs. Big brawl before Knobbs trips Butch and with some help from Sags, The Nasty Boys retain their championships before The Bushwhackers use their battering ram to knock both Nasty Boys out of the ring.

Fun match, Bushwhackers may be limited to what they can do after years of brawling but they have a gimmick that gets the fans on their feet and they use it to their advantage because this may be short but it is entertaining.

Winners: The Nasty Boys over The Bushwhackers via Roll-Up!

20-Man Battle Royal

A lot of your top WWF Superstars in a battle royal because why not, the big angle going into this is Earthquake squashing Damian, Jake The Snake Roberts’ snake. We have the likes of Hogan and Mr. Perfect in here too as well as Tugboat, Haku, The Rockers, Warlord, Barbarian and more. Jake has Lucifer with him, Damian’s big brother. We begin with people squaring off in corners as Mr. Perfect surveys the scene from the apron. Roberts goes right after Earthquake, Hogan chops at the behemoth too. Jannetty and Roma brawl by the ropes, Jannetty eliminates Roma before Roma returns the favour by pulling down Jannetty.

Not as choreographed as you would imagine, seems to be no rhyme or reason to who is attacking who. Warlord dumps out British Bulldog, revenge for his defeat at Wrestlemania. Snuka is gone via Haku, Tanaka was thrown out beforehand but the camera missed by who. Earthquake dumps out Roberts, all that build up for that. Roberts brings out Lucifer, scaring Earthquake and everyone in the process. We restart, Tugboat and Hogan were brawling before a bunch of heels broke it up. Bodies start being dumped out, Duggan takes out Warlord. Earthquake takes out Duggan as well as Texas Tornado, Hogan grabs Earthquake and dumps out Earthquake. Tugboat dumps out Hogan, that’s a huge elimination but Michaels dumps out Hogan with ease.

Bossman wants Perfect, Perfect and Barbarian combine to eliminate Bossman as Perfect dropkicks Bossman into Barbarian who back drops him out. Michaels manages to dropkick Haku out of the ring, we have Valentine and Michaels as well as Heenan Family members Mr. Perfect and Barbarian. Perfect and Michaels tear it up, Perfect almost flies out. Dropkick by Michaels, Michaels is whipped to the apron. Michaels ducks the first punch but Perfect elbows Michaels off the apron. Valentine is stuck in there with two Heenan Family members, Valentine knocks down Perfect and chops away at Barbarian. Perfect aids Barbarian and the beatdown continues on Valentine, Perfect dropkicks Barbarian by mistake, Valentine dumps out Barbarian.

Vicious chops in the corner by Perfect, Valentine reverses the hold. Whip to the buckle, chop sends Perfect flying. Super atomic drop sends Perfect into the buckle, elbow to the head. Wind-up elbow drop from Valentine, make it two. Perfect is tossed but holds onto the ropes, Valentine tries valiantly to toss out Perfect but Perfect reverses the scoop slam to dump out Valentine.

So, this match means nothing until the last few minutes. What is there to note? Well, Tugboat dumped out Hogan, will that lead to something? Surely, that is a massive deal. Shawn Michaels makes a name for himself, they obviously had their eyes on the future Heartbreak Kid. Valentine gets a crowd reaction that you will not believe unless you see it but yeah, this battle royal meant nothing seemingly in the long term and it was not entertaining either so very disappointing to be honest.

Winner: Mr. Perfect!

Ted Dibiase W/ Sensational Sherri vs Bret Hart

Dibiase beats down Hart to start, Hart counters with a reversal whip to the buckle and a hip-toss. Multiple clotheslines and Dibiase is dumped to the floor, plancha from The Hitman. Side headlock takedown from Hart, Dibiase reverses for a two count. Dibiase eats a shoulder block, missing a clothesline but Sherri grabs Hart’s ankle. Dibiase knees Sherri by mistake, O Connor roll up from Hart for two. Shoulder block again by Hart before a massive stun-gun from Dibiase, piledriver from Dibiase. Two for Dibiase, whip off the ropes. Dibiase misses a scoop slam, O Connor roll is countered as Hart is sent to the floor.

Sherri marvels at Dibiase’s work, Sherri gets in a slap on Hart. Sherri chokes Hart behind the referee’s back, Dibiase distracts the referee. Dibiase chokes Hart using the ropes, more attacks from Sherri. Chops in the corner from Dibiase, Hart is whipped into the buckle sternum-first. Million Dollar Dream is applied, Hart backs Dibiase into the buckle who hits his head hard. Dibiase is on the middle rope, Hart counters with a right hand. Right hands from Hart, to the ribs from Hart. Inverted atomic drop and flying elbow for two, Russian legsweep from Hart for two.

Hart is upset with the call from the referee, back-breaker from Hart. Bret’s rope elbow drop for two, Hart is frustrated now. Right hands, Dibiase ducks under Hart. Sherri grabs Bret’s foot, Sherri backs up. Hart eats an axe handle from behind, Piper has seen enough. Piper is walking to the ring, Hart slams Dibiase into the mat. Sherri spots Piper, Piper tells Sherri to get out of here, scaring her off. Piper looks under the ring, finding a broom saying that Sherri is a witch before smacking Sherri away. Dibiase rakes the eyes of Hart, Dibiase is after Piper. Hart and Dibiase brawl in the ramp, the referee calls for the bell as they are counted-out.

So, these two locked up at Survivor Series for a number of minutes and it was great. They were given more time here and they killed it again, Dibiase is great and Bret has quickly found his feet as a singles wrestler. Again, focus is Piper vs Dibiase with Virgil serving as a back drop, almost an afterthought. I just wonder how this will actually play out when it is time to do business. Exciting times in the WWF for sure!

Double Count-Out!

The Mountie W/ Jimmy Hart vs Tito Santana

Wrestlemania rematch, they lock-up. Clean break from The Mountie, Santana decks Mountie with a right hand. Atomic drop and dropkicks from Santana, Jimmy Hart and Mountie regroup on the floor before Santana comes out, sending Mountie into the ring apron. Back in the ring, Mountie goes low with rights but Santana is in control. Rights and lefts from Santana, Mountie is down in the corner. Whip to the buckle, monkey flip is blocked by Mountie. Santana holds his head, Mountie stomps away at Santana. Mountie has Santana in a hold where Santana cannot defend himself, Santana is bounced off the buckle over and over.

Santana blocks a splash with his knees, Flying Forearm from Santana. Jimmy Hart is in the ring with the cattle prod, Flying Forearm to Jimmy Hart. Hart dropped the prod to Mountie though, the referee does not see it and either does Santana. Cattle prod to the throat with cheesy electric sound effect and Mountie steals the win. Yeah, it was grand and short.

Winner: The Mountie over Tito Santana via Cattle Prod!

An alright edition, a good showcase for Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. All those three men look great, I want to see Taker vs Warrior. Not sure about Hogan vs Tugboat, will it lead to anything? Will we get Piper vs Dibiase? More questions than answers, not always a bad thing though. Thanks for reading and remember: there’s always another night!

WWF Saturday Night's Main Event November 23rd, 1990 Edition Review

Saturday Night's Main Event XXIX | Pro Wrestling | Fandom

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that baffles the mind more than a Ken Shamrock tweet! It’s another big edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event with Ultimate Warrior defending his WWF World Heavyweight Championship against The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, we also have Sgt. Slaughter vs Nikolai Volkoff, Big Bossman vs Mr. Perfect and Rick The Model Martel vs Tito Santana. High stakes for sure, cannot wait for this!

(WWF World Heavyweight Championship Match) The Ultimate Warrior © vs Ted Dibiase W/ Virgil

Following their battle at Survivor Series, these two will do battle once again as Warrior defends against Dibiase, a match that could easily take place on pay per view. Sadly, it seems Rhodes vs Dibiase is dropped for now. The two lock-up, Warrior shoves back Dibiase. Dibiase is shoved back again by Warrior, top wristlock does not work for Dibiase as Warrior shoves him down again. One-way traffic at this stage, knee and clubbing blows from Dibiase. Right hands and chops from the challenger, Irish whip with Dibiase missing a clothesline. Warrior answers with a clothesline of his own, another clothesline brings Dibiase to the floor. Noggin knocker to Virgil and Dibiase, Warrior hurls Dibiase into the ring. Warrior is on the top rope, diving axe handle.

Dibiase begs for mercy, right hands and chops in the corner. Whip to the buckle, Dibiase blocks with a knee and delivers a massive clothesline. Middle rope axe handle from Dibiase for two, piledriver for two. Dibiase tries a second piledriver but Warrior back drops Dibiase, two clotheslines as the momentum shifts in Warrior’s favour. Warrior goes for another clothesline but Virgil grabs his foot, distracted by this Dibiase knocks Warrior to the floor. In the ring, diving fist drop from Dibiase for two. Side headlock takedown, Warrior shoves off Dibiase. Dibiase manages to deliver a clothesline to floor Warrior, Irish whip with Dibiase lowering his head. Backslide counter from Warrior for two, Dibiase rakes the eyes and lands a big suplex.

Two for Dibiase, another suplex is blocked. Sunset flip from Warrior for two, Dibiase kicks Warrior in the head to escape. Warrior is thrown to the floor, Dibiase rams Warrior into the steel steps. In the ring, right hands from Dibiase on a kneeling Warrior. Warrior is shaking it off, Dibiase’s suplex is blocked with Warrior answering with a suplex of his own. Warrior and Dibiase collide in the middle the ring with both men nailing clotheslines, Dibiase tries a middle rope axe handle but a might right hand from Warrior floors Dibiase. Warrior is clubbed and kicked but Warrior is shaking off every attack, Dibiase is in shock. Right hand, clotheslines from Warrior. Flying shoulder tackle, Virgil attacks Warrior for the DQ.

Solid match from these two, they run through all their familiar spots. Dibiase is more than capable of getting an interesting match out of Warrior, crowd is on fire for the match and we even get a Macho King attack on Warrior after the bell to add to their feud. Dibiase does not get pinned which I think is a good idea, Dibiase could easily be inserted to a top feud due to his character, there is money to be made there for sure. Warrior has been growing on me since winning the championship, I think he is growing in his role as the top guy in the WWF. Warrior definitely sells a lot more and I want these two to do battle for sure.

Winner: The Ultimate Warrior over Ted Dibiase via DQ!

Sgt. Slaughter W/ General Adnan vs Nikolai Volkoff

These two were opposing captains at Survivor Series where Volkoff’s team emerged victorious due to Slaughter being disqualified. They come out here with their respective flags and Slaughter attacks Volkoff from behind whipping him with his riding cane/stick. Slaughter continues to lay a beating down before Hacksaw Jim Duggan comes to the ring with his 2X4, Slaughter leaves the ring with General Adnan. An angle as the bell never rings, an interesting one for sure.

Mr. Perfect W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Big Bossman

Heenan had continually insulted Bossman’s mother, Rude had joined in the act before leaving the WWF and now the job has fallen to the new key man in the Heenan Family Mr. Perfect. We begin with Perfect slapping Bossman, Bossman gets angry and slapped again. Bossman’s temper is already high, Perfect runs away from Bossman. Bossman catches Perfect and slams him to the mat. In the ring, clothesline by Bossman after Perfect tried a cartwheel to escape. Whip to the buckle, make it double. Perfect flips out of the corner, Bossman calls for the end. Perfect is dragged around the ring by his hair, Perfect is thrown across the ring where he lands groin first on the ring-post.

Back-breaker from Bossman, Bossman is on the top rope for a splash. Bossman leaps and crashes hard as Perfect rolls out of the way. Rolling neck-snap from Perfect, Bossman powers out at one. Perfect kicks Bossman who is on his knees, chops from Perfect. Small package for one, Bossman tries firing up but Perfect batters down Bossman. Perfect drops all his weight on the back of Bossman, Perfect exposes the turnbuckle behind the referee’s back. Perfect tries sending Bossman into the buckle but Bossman blocks, Perfect is smashed off the buckle. Massive right hands by Bossman, Perfect manages to reverse an Irish whip and send Bossman into the exposed buckle. Here comes Heenan to ringside, Perfect-Plex is countered for a small package.

Two for Bossman, Bossman and Perfect slug it out before Perfect connects with The Perfect-Plex. 1…2.. Bossman manages to power out, Heenan wants Perfect to send Bossman over the ropes, Bossman reverses the Irish whip with Perfect tumbling to the floor. Bossman grabs Heenan, Heenan slaps Bossman. Bossman chases after Heenan backstage with Perfect returning to the ring while Bossman is counted out.

Another solid match, Bossman injures his back off the top rope splash. That leads to Bossman holding his back throughout the entire match, Perfect works over the back for the entire match and I thought it was great. Having Heenan not there hurt the match as Heenan is such a heat magnet that having him there instantly improves the quality of a match. Good angle, here is to hoping that Bossman gets his hands on Heenan at the rumble.

Winner: Mr. Perfect over Big Bossman via Count-Out!

Rick The Model Martel vs Tito Santana

A match that has been over a year in the making, the former Strikeforce members finally go at it one on one in a big match. Martel turned on Santana and became The Model, Martel assaults Santana to start the match. On the floor, Martel runs into the ring-post and Santana is in control. Santana works the arm before Martel grabs the hair, small package from Santana for two. Santana is back on the arm, Martel goes to the throat with a thrust. Snap-mare into a reverse chin-lock before Santana slips out for a hammerlock. Martel pulls Santana into the buckle, foot choke from The Model.

Choke from Martel, throat thrust from Martel. Martel chokes Santana as the referee cannot see the cheating act of Martel. Santana fights back on his knees before an eye rake stops that, back-breaker by Martel. Martel teases climbing high before nailing another back-breaker, Martel admires his handy work. Martel is too slow climbing the top rope, Santana crotches Martel. Martel begs for mercy as Santana stomps the life out of Martel, rights and lefts. Whip to the buckle and clothesline, dropkick from Santana.

Back-breaker by Santana, Santana climbs high and nails a diving clothesline for two. Martel ducks a right hand, atomic drop is blocked by Santana who counters for a figure four. However, Martel counters with a small package for two. Santana is headbutted in the ribs by Martel who sweeps the legs and applies The Boston Crab for the win.

As the years go by, I will never understand why they did not continue to push Tito Santana, Santana often garners some of the biggest reactions on WWF TV anytime he is inside of that ring. The man can go and work a crowd and a match with any heel in there, Santana stole the show with Mr. Perfect and he stole the show with Martel. Martel I enjoy a lot and this feud with Jake Roberts could be a launching pad to greater things for Martel in the WWF. Glad to see these two one on one, a few more minutes and I am sure I would have loved it even more.

Winner: Rick Martel over Tito Santana via Boston Crab!

So that was another edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event in the bag and I have to say it was a good edition! You have a championship match with is enjoyable and it builds to Savage vs Warrior which should be excellent, Savage has been on a warpath since turning heel, Savage is just one of my all-time favourites based on this heel run alone. Slaughter vs Duggan is an easy match to do because of the USA vs anti-USA gimmick, easy money and easy match that I expect to take place sooner rather than later. Perfect and Bossman was good too, Bossman sold his ass off during this match and we have Martel vs Santana which could have been really good had it a few more minutes, next is Royal Rumble 1991! Thanks for reading and remember: there’s always another night!

WWF Saturday Night's Main Event October 13th, 1990 Edition Review

Image result for wwf saturday night's main event

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that has less credibility than a Brad Sheppard report! It’s WWF Saturday Night’s Main Event, the one before Survivor Series 1990. Featuring the likes of LOD, The Ultimate Warrior, Texas Tornado and Demolition. Let’s see what the WWF has to offer!

LOD & Ultimate Warrior vs Demolition

As we head towards Survivor Series, we have a little preview of one of the major matches as LOD who had been at war with Demolition throughout the year team up with the WWF Champion The Ultimate Warrior to have this massive six-man tag match. Warrior runs down to the ring and we have a triple clothesline as Demolition are sent tumbling to the floor. Dustin Rhodes is here at ringside, I am sure that will mean something later. Smash and Animal kick off the match officially, Smash clotheslines and clubs Animal. Rights from Smash, Animal reverses an Irish whip and lands his powerslam for two.

Smash smacks the throat of Animal, tag to Ax. Animal tags Warrior, multiple stomps in the corner. Running shoulder blocks from Warrior, clothesline takes down Ax. Scoop slam for Smash, scoop slam for Crush and Ax. Warrior misses his splash on Ax though, Smash tags into the match. Axe handles from Smash, Smash talks to the referee as Crush hurls Warrior into the ring apron. Warrior tries fighting back but Crush grabs Warrior from the apron. Smash reassumes control as Demolition quick tag in and out while punishing Warrior. Crush is the legal man, Crush chokes Warrior in the corner. Tag to Smash, they all beat down Warrior before Animal makes the save.

Demolition Decapitator is stopped by Hawk, Smash is down holding his back while Warrior is rallying on the canvas. Tag to Hawk, big right hand. Elbow for Smash, flying shoulder block from Hawk. Fist drop, Hawk to the top rope. Diving Clothesline, Hawk sees Crush and Ax coming in but Hawk batters them away. In comes Warrior, clotheslines for Smash and Ax on the apron. LOD attack the other two members of Demolition. Flying shoulder tackle from Warrior on Smash, Ultimate Splash and this match is over!

Hot crowd, action is fast and snug as Demolition cheat at every corner while Warrior and LOD run through everything in their way. Like bulldozers, Team Warrior bring the pain to this match and it was a lot of fun when all was said and done, great way to kick off the show.

Winners: Team Warrior over Demolition via Ultimate Splash!

Macho King Randy Savage vs Dusty Rhodes

Big rematch from Summerslam here as Sapphire was stolen away from Dusty which led to Savage stealing the win over Rhodes. Sapphire is now in the corner of Ted Dibiase which is a sight almost too sore to bear for Rhodes. Savage gets caught with an elbow, hard Irish whip. Make it two, bearhug from Rhodes. Savage rakes the eyes, jabs by Savage. Savage reverses an Irish whip, hip-toss is blocked for a backslide pin from Rhodes for two. Rhodes is distracted by Sherri, knee from Savage. Sherri chokes Rhodes behind’s the referee’s back. Knee drop by Savage, lefts and rights by Savage. Sleeper by Savage, here comes Dibiase and Virgil.

They buy off the fans and gain seats, Dibiase and Virgil are front row for this match. Dustin Rhodes tears up the money, Dibiase is in shock. Dibiase sits down by Dustin, Rhodes breaks free from the sleeper. Shoulder block, Dibiase and Dustin are having issues. Bionic Elbow on Savage, Rhodes is on the floor shouting at Dibiase. We take a break, Savage is in control. Eye rake, and a choke using the top rope. Sherri chokes Rhodes behind the referee’s back, cover for two. Top rope guillotine from Savage, diving axe handle for two.

Savage chokes at The American Dream, rights and lefts by Savage. Rhodes is firing up, another eye rake by Savage. Rhodes sends Savage into the buckle, shot to the throat by Savage. Savage misses a knee to the back, headbutt from Rhodes. Rhodes counters a scoop slam for a two, Savage and Rhodes are trading punches. Savage misses a diving axe handle, Dustin nails Dibiase. Dibiase and Virgil are brawling with Dustin, Dustin is down. Rhodes has no idea, choking the life out of Savage in the ring. However, Rhodes spots what is going on, saving his son. Savage is on the top rope, diving axe handle with Rhodes hitting the guardrail, Savage wins by count-out.

Great way to build heat for the Dibiase vs Rhodes match, Dusty dives onto his son to save him from the beaten that Dibiase lays down on him. Dustin blades too which looks great with his long flowing blonde hair. Terrific stuff with Dusty cradling Dustin, I want to see these two go at it so badly right now. Savage rips up a poster of Warrior, a subtle hint at things to come down the road. Fun match, great angle.

Winner: Randy Savage over Dusty Rhodes via Count-Out!

Tugboat & Hulk Hogan vs Rhythm & Blues W/ Jimmy Hart

Hogan’s partner is back, the fearsome Tugboat is here and he wants Bravo & Earthquake but they have to settle for Rhythm & Blues. Valentine has dyed his hair black and is teaming with Honky, prolonging his WWF career which was a wise choice for both men at this point as the focus was shifting towards a lot of newer and younger stars in the WWF. Hogan and Honky to kick us off, knee by Honky. Right hands by Honky, tag to Valentine. Kicks by the tag team, Hogan ducks their clothesline though and nails a massive clothesline on Rhythm & Blues. Hogan whips both into the boot of Tugboat, it’s timber for Valentine & Honky.

Tag to Tugboat, arm-wringer from Tugboat. Valentine jumps into the ropes, tag to Hogan. Middle rope axe handle, arm-wringer from The Hulkster.  Tag to Tugboat, axe handle for Valentine. Eye rake from Valentine, chopping away at Tugboat. Elbow to the head, tag to Honky. Honky runs into a bearhug, Valentine comes in illegally with an axe handle. Stomps from Honky, tag to Valentine. Big knee drops to the back of the head, tag to Honky. Big elbow to the throat, Hogan makes the save. Valentine gets in some cheap shots behind the referee’s back, tag to Honky. Axe handles from Honky, choke from Honky. Reverse chin-lock from Honky, tag to Valentine. Double elbow misses, tag to Hogan. Right hands for Jimmy Hart as well as Rhythm & Blues, whip and axe bomber from Hogan.

Hogan mounts Valentine and delivers massive right hands, another Irish whip. Elbow to Valentine, big boot from Hogan. Hogan stops from doing the leg drop as Tugboat spots Earthquake coming down to ringside, Bravo too. Hogan tags Tugboat, double clothesline from Tugboat & Hogan. Corner splash from Tugboat, Honky is knocked off the apron. Jimmy Hart is grabbed by Tugboat, Honky waffles Tugboat with his guitar. We have a DQ but Earthquake and Bravo are here, Hogan is trying to battle everyone off but there are too many heels for Hogan to battle off, Tugboat is damaged from the guitar to the back. Powerslam from Earthquake on Hogan, giant splash on Hogan. Tugboat whacks Earthquake with the guitar, guitar shots for everyone as Tugboat fends off everyone.

Another good angle on this show, Hogan has been left battered once more by Earthquake. Earthquake is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the WWF, a count-out victory at Summerslam left the door for this feud open and we are rocking steadily onto Survivor Series, another match I am looking forward to for sure.

Winners: Tugboat & Hulk Hogan over Rhythm & Blues via DQ!

(WWF Intercontinental Championship Match) Texas Tornado © vs Haku W/ Bobby Heenan

First defence for the newly crowned Intercontinental Champion, Kerry Von Erich defeated Perfect at Summerslam but here is Haku, another member of Heenan’s Family. Arm-drag and scoop slam from Tornado, attempt at the claw-hold. Haku blocks and rolls to the floor, Haku applies a sleeper after an Irish whip. Tornado escapes before running back into a sleeper, Heenan seems to have something on his person. What could it be? Tornado escapes the sleeper but Haku nails shoulder blocks, corner clothesline. Headbutt by Haku, choke from Haku. Tornado escapes for an Irish whip to the buckle, Claw Hold from Tornado. Spinning Tornado Punch from Tornado, this one is over. Quick match to establish the reign of Tornado, nothing major to note here.

Winner: Texas Tornado over Haku via Tornado Punch!

Koko B Ware vs Sgt. Slaughter W/ General Adnan

Slaughter made his pay per view debut at Summerslam appearing on The Brother Love show, Slaughter a symbol of The USA is now an Iraq sympathiser with General Adnan in his corner. Koko is the quicker of the two, arm-drags which catch Slaughter off guard. Koko’s shoulder block does not move Slaughter, Koko slides through the legs and delivers a dropkick. Whip to the buckle but Koko misses the corner splash. Big chop and back body drop from Slaughter, knee drops to the head. Back-breaker from Slaughter for two, Koko is whipped to the ropes but Slaughter ducks the head. Neck-breaker by Koko, two big dropkicks and a headbutt. Koko ducks a clothesline but runs right into a stun-gun, knuckle-lock from Slaughter with Koko submitting. Squash match to put over Slaughter, big things to come from Slaughter.

Winner: Sgt. Slaughter over Koko B Ware via Knuckle-Lock!

This was an above average edition of the show for sure, the positives are the two excellent angles you get from the first two matches of this show. We have the build up for Dusty Rhodes vs Ted Dibiase with Dibiase attacking and busting open Dusty’s son Dustin. Dusty could only throw his body on top of Dustin to protect his son from the attacks of Virgil and Dibiase, it was great. We also had Earthquake once again destroy Hulk Hogan, all the heels combined to do the damage to Hogan and I want to see those two tear it up in the ring at Survivor Series! Thanks for reading and remember: there’s always another night!

WWF Summerslam 1990 Review

Image result for wwf summerslam 1990

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that brings the goods like an NXT Takeover! It’s WWF Summerslam 1990, double main event time as we have Hulk Hogan vs Earthquake, Earthquake nearly ended the career of Hulk Hogan. We have never seen Hogan so badly injured by one man, not Bundy and not Andre have done this much damage. Hogan needed all your prayers to get back his strength and now Hogan faces Earthquake who will have Dino Bravo and Jimmy Hart by his side. We also have Rick Rude vs Ultimate Warrior inside a steel cage. One man has beaten Warrior and his name is Rick Rude, can Rude do it one more time with the championship on the line? We also have Demolition vs The Hart Foundation which should be fantastic and much more. Let’s waste no more time and get this show on the road!

The Rockers vs Power & Glory

This starts on the floor, Michaels is smashed in the knee with the chain of Hercules. Roma has Jannetty in the ring, right hand after right hand. Jannetty battles both men at once, hip-tosses and scoop slams all around. Dropkick and noggin knocker, Slick is on the apron. The numbers are too much, Hercules & Roma batter Jannetty before Jannetty kicks away Hercules and cradles Roma for two. Slick grabs the referee to allow Roma time to survive, Jannetty elevates Hercules to the floor. Roma and Jannetty are in the ring, Hercules kicks Michaels to the floor. Roma whips Jannetty hard, Jannetty attempts a sunset flip but Roma tags in Hercules who takes apart Jannetty.

Jannetty almost cradles Hercules for two, Hercules tags in Roma. Roma nails two back-breakers for two, Hercules kicks Michaels off the apron again. Jannetty reverses an Irish whip for a powerslam, Hercules eats a superkick. Top rope diving fist drop onto Roma with Hercules making the save. Roma is saved by Hercules as Jannetty’s O Connor roll goes wrong as Hercules clotheslines Jannetty’s head off. Double flapjack by Power & Glory, clothesline by Hercules. Tag to Roma, superplex and splash combination and we have your winners.

So, this was an interesting match for sure, Michaels having a legit injury sucks because we were robbed of a great tag match and it seemed like The Rockers were just getting back on track in the WWF. A new gimmick for Roma and Hercules, badly needed for both men. Hercules was dying a slow death as a babyface while Roma was directionless with Powers in The Wild Stallions. Jannetty kicked a lot of ass in there by himself which was great to see the crowd so behind the babyfaces. A good opening match for sure, let’s see if the momentum can continue onto the next match.

Winners: Power & Glory over The Rockers via Suplex/Splash Combination!

(WWF Intercontinental Championship Match) Mr. Perfect © W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Texas Tornado

They lock-up, Tornado shoves back Perfect. Perfect felt that one for sure, Perfect takes a breather. Nice arm-drag ad hip-toss from Perfect, Perfect thinks little of Texas Tornado. Lock-up, Perfect grabs the hair to the corner we go. Chop from Perfect, Tornado fires back with an Irish whip reversal. Hip-toss and clothesline to the floor, we reset once more. Arm-wringer and right hands from Tornado, Perfect clobbers Tornado to escape the hold. Chops and rights by Perfect, snap-mare into the neck-snap. Whip to the buckle into the sleeper, Tornado is slowly fading. To the buckle, Perfect unloads with right hands. Slap from Perfect, make it three. Right hands from Perfect, Tornado shakes it off. Catapult to the ring-post, Texas Claw Hold into a Tornado Punch and this match is over!

Talk about making a big star, Texas Tornado is on the map in the WWF. Sad that they did to Perfect, Perfect has gotten the short end of the stick in my opinion with the Hogan feuding not leading to a pay per view match and a short reign for Perfect as Intercontinental Champion. It was quick though, Tornado has been established as a force to be reckoned with in the WWF.

Winner: Texas Tornado over Mr. Perfect via Tornado Punch!

Sensational Sherri vs Sweet Sapphire

These two had been feuding since Macho King set his sights on Dusty Rhodes, Sapphire and Rhodes would get the last laugh at Mania defeating Sherri and Savage in a mixed tag’s match. Sherri vs Sapphire does not take place though as Sapphire does not appear, Sherri is declared the winner as Sapphire has to forfeit because she does not appear.

Winner: Sensational Sherri over Sweet Sapphire via Forfeit!

Warlord W/ Slick vs Tito Santana

With Barbarian and Warlord splitting as The Powers Of Pain, they went their separate ways and freshened up their gear/gimmick. Santana grabs the headlock, Warlord picks up Santana and tosses him across the ring. Lock-up, Warlord pushes back Santana. Santana ducks the punch of Warlord, massive rights from Santana. Arm-wringer, elbow drop and two dropkicks. Actually, make it three. Warlord is on the floor and angry, Slick talks strategy. Arm-wringer from Santana, Warlord counters for a scoop slam. Santana dodges an elbow drop, Santana lands punches to the head before Warlord presses Santana to the floor on a pin-fall attempt.

Slick distracts the referee as Warlord rams Santana’s back into the ring-post. Slick has his shoe but the referee prevents an attack, Warlord throws Santana back into the ring. Massive smash from Warlord, forearms to the spine of Santana. Arm-wringer and shots to the gut in the corner, whip to the buckle. Santana blocks with his foot, massive clothesline for two. Rights and lefts by Santana, Warlord reverses an Irish whip but Santana ducks the clothesline and delivers his Flying Forearm. Warlord places his foot on the ropes to survive, Santana’s monkey flip does not work in the corner. Warlord picks up Santana and a huge Running Powerslam ends this match.

Solid win to establish Warlord as someone not to be messed with in the WWF. Santana brings that babyface fire that had everyone watching the SNME match with Mr. Perfect on their feet, that flying forearm is a thing of beauty. Crowd explodes when Warlord is smashed with it. Good stuff throughout, Warlord has some adjusting to do as a singles superstar but let’s not write off Warlord just yet, there is time for improvement!

Winner: Warlord over Tito Santana via Running Powerslam!

(WWF World Tag Team Championship Two Out Of Three Falls Match) Demolition © vs The Hart Foundation

These two tag teams have been on a collision course since after Wrestlemania, The Rockers and The Legion Of Doom have also been wrapped up in this war but it comes to an end tonight with The Hart Foundation challenging for the championships. Demolition consist of Crush and Smash on this night, only 2 members of Demolition may be allowed at ringside at all times to prevent Demolition cheating like they had in previous championship defences.

Smash and Bret to start, Smash has the strength advantage. Smash tries pulling Bret to Crush, Crush tries entering the ring but here comes Neidhart to batter Crush. Back-breaker, middle rope elbow for two as Crush leg drops Bret on the neck. Smash tags Crush, Demolition Decapitator for the first fall, the champions are halfway to victory.

Neidhart tries reviving Bret, Demolition double team Bret behind the referee’s back. Crush is with Bret, massive chokeslam from Crush. Tag to Smash, axe handle to the chest. Belly to back suplex for two, tag to Crush. Snap-mare into a chin-lock from Crush, Bret reaches his feet and elbows Crush before Crush cuts off Bret. Smash is in, whip with Bret ducking the clothesline and nailing a clothesline of his own. Bret crawls with Smash grabbing the leg, Bret tags in Neidhart. Forearms for both members of Demolition, elbow to Smash for two. Powerslam for two, shoulder blocks in the corner. Tag to Bret, Neidhart charges in with a shoulder block, Bret knocks Crush to the floor. Hart Attack with Crush stopping the referee from counting three. We have a DQ, we are tied in falls.

Final fall is on the way, Crush clotheslines Bret to the floor. Ax crawls under the ring as Demolition distract the referee. Bret shoulder blocks Smash, apron sunset flip for two. Inverted atomic drop for Smash, Bret stomps on the mid-section. Tag to Neidhart, Smash dodges Bret but does not dodge the clothesline of Neidhart. Nedihart slams Bret onto Smash for two, Smash rolls out of the ring and swaps places with Ax. Ax clubs the bejesus out of Bret as a fresh man, clothesline from Ax on Bret. Shots to the back of the head, scoop slam for two. Russian leg-sweep for two, Bret is whipped into the buckle sternum first hard. Neidhart saves Bret, tag to Crush.

Back-breaker from Crush with Neidhart saving the match again, Neidhart and Crush brawl as Smash appears from under the ring and helps Ax batter Bret. Smash swaps with Ax but LOD are here and are not happy, they grab Ax from under the ring. This stops Demolition from hitting their finish, Smash and Ax brawl with LOD but this leaves Crush all alone in the ring, Crush has fallen from the top rope thanks to LOD. Slingshot shoulder block by Neidhart, roll-up from Bret and we have new champions!

What a classic match, gutsy performance from Bret who takes one hell of a beating throughout this match. Credit for Bret making all three members of Demolition look as strong as possible, love the cheating tactics of Demolition. Such a sucker for the three man gimmick defending the tag belts, love the switching and how much it annoys the fans in attendance. If I have a criticism, I would have to say Crush attacking the referee instead of breaking up the pin-fall made little sense to me but you get that championship change which is terrific, Bret and Neidhart had been part of some of my favourite matches from 1989 and 1990, glad they are where they are right now.

Winners: The Hart Foundation over Demolition via Two Out Of Three Falls!

Bad News Brown vs Jake The Snake Roberts

Roberts has transitioned into a new feud with Brown, should be an interesting match for sure. Brown has a Harlem sewer rat to counteract Roberts’ Damien. Big Bossman is your special referee, Brown misses a corner clothesline. DDT attempt from Roberts with Brown sliding away. Throat thrust from Brown, hip-toss from Brown. Roberts is holding his back, leg drop from Brown. Two for Brown, Brown points at Bossman. Roberts nails a kick to the ribs, another DDT attempt with Brown rolling to the floor. Brown smashes Roberts with a right hand on the floor, chair to the ribs. Bossman tells Brown to enter the ring, Brown obliges before tossing Roberts back into the ring.

Hard Irish whip, make it two. Roberts says bring it on though, Brown continues to land big shots to the neck and chest of Roberts. Another whip to the buckle, clothesline by Brown. Middle rope fist drop misses for Brown, knee-lift from Roberts. Snap jabs and a short-arm clothesline from Roberts, Brown back drops Roberts to stop the DDT. Stomps to the back, Brown grabs a chair again. Roberts is nailed in the ribs and that is all, Bossman disqualifies Brown.

You know for all his popularity, the WWF book Jake The Snake Roberts so poorly. It is almost shocking at times, Roberts and his DDT drive the fans into a frenzy but we hardly see Roberts go over anyone on pay per view. Anyways, this match was about 4 minutes long, the quality of this card is a bit all over the place. It is what it is, Roberts win and Brown is scared of Damian.

Winner: Jake Roberts over Bad News Brown via DQ!

Jim Duggan & Nikolai Volkoff vs The Orient Express W/ Mr. Fuji

Volkoff is now a babyface due to the end of The Cold War with Volkoff becoming a patriot. Awful singing but we have a match to get to eventually, Sato and Tanaka jump the duo. Double atomic drops and boots by the babyfaces, Orient Express is on the floor. Tanaka and Volkoff start, Volkoff pushes off Tanaka. Shoulder block does not work, crossbody does not work either but Sato comes off the top rope with a diving brain chop to allow Tanaka to do some damage. Fuji smashes Volkoff in the throat with his cane, tag to Sato. Hook kick from Sato, tag to Tanaka. Falling splash misses, tag to Duggan. Duggan batters Sato and Tanaka, throat thrust by Tanaka but Duggan answers with a clothesline to the duo. Rights and lefts, noggin knocker and clotheslines. Sato is whipped into Tanaka, Volkoff sends Sato to the floor and Three-Point Stance Clothesline on Tanaka for the win. Quick win to put over the team, hardly a thing to say to be honest, was fine.

Winners: Jim Duggan & Nikolai Volkoff over The Orient Express via Clothesline!

Dusty Rhodes vs Macho King Randy Savage W/ Sensational Sherri

So, Sapphire had been receiving anonymous gifts from a mysterious benefactor. Could this be a reason for Sapphire’s absence? She had not appeared for her match with Sherri, she was nowhere to be found during the day. Here is The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase, what is going on here? Rhodes has been thrown by this for sure, Dibiase talks about his money buying anything and anyone. Dibiase has bought Sapphire, she has sold her soul to the devil himself.

Rhodes was chasing after Dibiase, Savage attacks. Diving double axe handle from the top rope, Sherri elbows Rhodes in the face. Foot choke from Savage, knee choke from Sherri. Elbow to the throat from Savage, left jabs from Macho King. Rhodes grabs Savage in the corner, elbows and right hands from The Common Man. Elbow to the head, make it two. Dropkick from Rhodes, Savage hides behind Sherri. Sherri hands Savage her shoe, Sherri is in the ring and Rhodes catches Sherri. Savage nails Rhodes with the high heel, Savage steals the win.

I have no problem with Rhodes transitioning into a feud with Dibiase but damn, they robbed me of a very entertaining match here. Say what you want about Rhodes’ thoughts on his WWF run but I have enjoyed every twist and turn so far, the man is so charismatic and can do it everything he needs to do to get the crowd going wild. It was a great gimmick and I hope Rhodes can recover from this feud and booking because Rhodes is tremendous. Shocked to see Savage as seemingly the odd one out in this feud, too short for a real rating.

Winner: Randy Savage over Dusty Rhodes via Heel To The Head!

Earthquake W/ Dino Bravo & Jimmy Hart vs Hulk Hogan W/ The Big Bossman

Double payday for Bossman, let’s get down to the real business. Earthquake has been built for this moment, Earthquake has steamrolled babyface after babyface, injuring countless wrestlers and putting them out of action. Hogan was on Brother Love’s show which led to Earthquake taking out Hogan. Hogan has never ever been injured like Earthquake did to him, worst night of Hogan’s life. Hogan had support from his friend Tugboat but even Tugboat felt victim to the attacks of Earthquake and Dino Bravo. Big Bossman has stepped up to be in Hogan’s corner but Hogan has the toughest task of them all. Hogan has to overcome the seemingly invincible Earthquake, who will come out on top?

They take their time before locking up, Hogan tries shoving Earthquake back and it does not work. Earthquake shoves back Hogan though, make it double. Doubt creeps across the face of Hogan, side headlock by Hogan. Earthquake shoulder blocks Hogan, Bossman and Hogan are talking strategy. Boot, eye rake and right hands by Hogan, slam attempt is blocked by Earthquake. Clubbing blows by Earthquake, whip to the buckle. Hogan is down, whip to the opposite buckle. Earthquake eats a boot and multiple clotheslines, chops too. Earthquake is still up on his feet, shot for Jimmy Hart and Bravo. A wound up right knocks Earthquake on his ass for the first time ever possibly.

Hogan and Bossman batter Bravo and Earthquake on the floor, Bossman and Hogan whip Bravo. Double big boot for Bravo and Earthquake, the referee asks Bossman to leave the ring. This allows Bravo and Earthquake to nail a scoop slam, elbow drop by Earthquake for two. Earthquake is climbing to the top rope, Hogan is smashed in the spine with a forearm. Earthquake stomps on the fingers of Hogan, Boston crab from Earthquake. Hogan manages to reach the ropes, Bravo scoop slams Hogan hard on the mat. Bravo tosses Hogan in the ring, scoop slam by Earthquake. Hogan dodges the elbow drop, there is a sliver of hope for Hogan.

Chop and eye rake, Earthquake is too heavy to lift as Hogan collapses on the scoop slam. Bearhug from Earthquake, Hogan rallies and breaks free. Shoulder blocks do not knock the big man down. Crossbody attempt by Hogan, massive powerslam from Earthquake. Two for Earthquake, the tremors are starting as Earthquake nails his splash. Bravo asks for another splash, another splash connects as Hogan Hulks Up motherfucker! Those right hands are not stinging Hogan, right hands by Hogan. Big boot, scoop slam by Hogan. Atomic Leg Drop with Bravo distracting the referee, Jimmy Hart attacks Hogan. Hogan presses Hart onto Earthquake, Bossman is fighting with Bravo.

Jimmy Hart has his megaphone, looking to nail Hogan. Earthquake grabs Hogan from behind but it misses as Jimmy Hart waffles Earthquake by accident. Hogan scoop slams Earthquake through a table and gets the count-out victory. Earthquake, Bravo and Hart try to rough up Hogan after the bell but Bossman saves the day with a chair and his nightstick!

Earthquake did not take the leg drop and the pin? Shocking, could we see these two meet again? The match was all sorts of Hogan awesomeness, the selling, the doubt and the Hulking Up. Loved how Earthquake was so dominant throughout the match, one elbow drop and Hogan was near dead. The powerslam was so solid, the finish leaves the door open for a rematch and I would not mind it as Hogan’s crowd control is simply amazing. Even with a count-out finish, the fans were happy and I was happy too, I mean how good is The Hulkster?

Winner: Hulk Hogan over Earthquake via Count-Out!

(WWF World Heavyweight Championship Steel Cage Match) Ravishing Rick Rude W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Ultimate Warrior ©

This match starts on top of the cage as Warrior tries entering the ring. Rude is blocking his path but Warrior knocks Rude down. Rude is staggered and Warrior nails a diving axe handle. Warrior hurls Rude into the cage wall, Rude tries crawling away. Warrior is in hot pursuit, Rude meets every single cage wall. Warrior misses a flying shoulder tackle on Rude and crashes into the cage wall. Rude is climbing his way to victory, Warrior makes his way to Rude but Rude kicks away Warrior. Rude decides to nail a diving axe handle to stop Warrior, Rude is bleeding. Warrior meets the cage wall, right hand and backhand by The Ravishing One.

Into the cage wall again goes Warrior, Warrior and Rude begin slugging it out in the middle of the ring. Eye rake by Rude, Warrior’s face is raked off the steel bars. Rude nails a gut kick, Rude Awakening is denied by Warrior. Clothesline by Warrior, splash is blocked as Rude lifts his knees. Rude Awakening connects in the middle of the ring, Rude climbs to the top of the cage. Diving Fist Drop from Rude, Rude tries for a second fist drop and Warrior smashes Rude in the ribs. Warrior crawls towards the door, Heenan closes the door on the face of Warrior. 1….2… Warrior kicks out!

Side headlock from Rude, Warrior shoves him off and both men bang heads. Rude goes for the door, Heenan grabs Rude’s hands to help pull him out of the cage. Rude’s bare bottom is exposed for the world to see as Warrior pulls so hard that Heenan is in the ring. Massive right hand floors Heenan, atomic drop with Heenan being knocked out of the cage. Rude clotheslines Warrior down, Warrior begins to rally and shake off the attacks of Rude. Clotheslines by Warrior, gorilla press slam and Warrior begins climbing out of the cage to victory. Rude has no clue where he is as Warrior climbs his way out of the cage for the win.

This just did not do it for me, I do not know if the crowd was burnt out from Hogan vs Earthquake or perhaps this match was so quick but something was a miss with this match. Things never kicked into the next gear, I like both men. Rude’s gimmick is tremendous and his in-ring work is phenomenal while Warrior is over enough with the audience that anything he does in that ring works but it never comes together in this match. Rude blades, trying to add some drama to this one but I never felt like Rude had a realistic hope of beating Warrior. It just did not have that drama for me, I cannot figure out Rude would not try to escape after the Rude Awakening.

Winner: Ultimate Warrior over Ravishing Rick Rude via Escape!

That was WWF’s Summerslam 1990, a mixed bag if I am honest from the WWF. First, let’s address the two matches we did not get. Beefcake vs Perfect and Tito vs Martel. Both would have been great blow-offs to their feuds and while Tornado was a suitable replacement, I cannot help but think where we could have gone with the possibility of Beefcake winning the championship. Roddy Piper and Vince Mcmahon instead of Ventura and Monsoon is awful, Piper gets old real fast in the commentator role. Anyways like Wrestlemania VI, we got extended squash matches on the card. Warlord vs Santana, Volkoff & Duggan vs Orient Express, Savage vs Rhodes. Not a fan of those three matches I mentioned, thought more could have been done to make the last one more interesting for sure. Brown vs Roberts was disappointing too, not a fan of how that match played out, the snake at the end sent the fans home happy but did not justify the match or finish in my opinion.

Hogan vs Earthquake delivered because it was Hogan’s return and Hogan works the crowd to perfection. As I stated above, all of Hogan’s spots come together and the crowd loses their collective mind with a finish that leaves a rematch on the table. Warrior vs Rude does not connect like the Hogan match, it seems abrupt and over before we get to enjoy it. So, did it live up to my expectations? The answer is no, I had high hopes coming into Summerslam 1990 but beyond Hogan vs Earthquake and an excellent tag team match for the tag team championships (Not counting Crush attacking the referee), the quality felt like a decent Saturday Night’s Main Event edition. Thanks for reading and remember: there’s always another night!

WWF Saturday Night's Main Event July 28th, 1990 Edition Review

Image result for wwe saturday night's main event

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that divides opinion more on the internet than Jim Cornette! Ultimate Warrior vs Ravishing Rick Rude for the WWF Championship. The Rockers vs Demolition for the WWF World Tag Team Championships and Mr. Perfect vs Tito Santana for the WWF Intercontinental Championship. It’s Wild Kingdom edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event.

(WWF World Heavyweight Championship Match) The Ultimate Warrior © vs Ravishing Rick Rude W/ Bobby Heenan

One man has beaten The Warrior, that is Rick Rude. Rude has the skills to beat the Warrior but could he become champion? Rude has undergone intense training and shaved his trademark long hair. Warrior has his back turned and Rude attacks before the bell, Rude is sent into the buckle head-first by Warrior. Warrior throws Rude to the corner, hard Irish whip combined with an atomic drop. Rude is clotheslined to the floor, Heenan checks on Rude and Warrior bangs both their heads together. Back in the ring, Warrior delivers a massive clothesline. Warrior is on the top rope, diving axe handle by Warrior. Ultimate Splash misses as Rude rolls out of the way. Warrior rolls to the floor, Rude grabs the championship. Heenan distracts the referee as Rude cracks Warrior in the head with the championship.

Rude breaks the count, Heenan is with the referee again. Rude climbs to the top rope, Warrior catches Rude with a right hand. Inverted atomic drop, Rude is in the corner. Rude blocks an oncoming Warrior with a knee and a clothesline knocks down the champion. Rude is attacking the spine, Warrior blocks the slam and delivers one of his own. Rude slides out of the second slam attempt, sleeper hold from Rude. Warrior fades but rallies, jaw-breaker from Warrior. Rude starts delivering right hands to Warrior, Warrior is shocked. Rude steps on the fingers and tries for his neck-breaker. Warrior is blocking Rude’s hands, Rude ducks a clothesline and nails a thrust-kick to the ribs. Rude Awakening for two, Warrior powers up. Clotheslines all around, flying shoulder block and Ultimate Splash but Heenan grabs Warrior’s hair. Warrior grabs Heenan, Rude and Warrior brawl for a bit while the referee continues counting. Warrior beats up Heenan in the ring, Rude is counted out!

That was a very good opening match, a championship level of match on Saturday Night’s Main Event. I do like the angle of Rude having Warrior’s number due to being the only man to ever defeat Warrior. The count-out can lead to another match to find a definitive winner between the two. Rude is a heat magnet and his selling is tremendous. Love his facials when taking the atomic drops, too good was Mr. Rude.

Winner: Ultimate Warrior over Ravishing Rick Rude via Count-Out!

(WWF World Tag Team Championship Match) Demolition © vs The Rockers

So a whole bunch of new faces have come into the WWF since the last edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event. The likes of Tugboat who is backing Hogan against Earthquake and Dino Bravo, The Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich and a third member of Demolition named Crush. The reason for the addition of Crush was due to Ax’s declining health. Smash and Jannetty start, Smash clubs down Jannetty. Smash misses a corner splash, arm-drag and chop block by Jannetty. Dropkick with Smash hitting the floor, simultaneous head-scissors and dropkicks by the challengers. Lock-up between Jannetty and Smash, Smash goes low with rights and lefts.

Michaels reverses the whip to the buckle, double hip-toss and elbow drop by The Rockers. Michaels tags Jannetty, side headlock from Jannetty. Crush has Jannetty on the top rope, Crush argues with the referee so Jannetty dives off for a sunset flip, two for Jannetty. Tag to Michaels who works the arm, series of quick tags with Jannetty being the legal man.

Jannetty slides out of the ring to avoid an attack from Smash on the apron, Ax drills Jannetty with a clothesline. Smash clubs Jannetty in the ring, axe handles to the back of Jannetty. Smash tosses Jannetty to the floor, Crush military presses Jannetty into the ring. Tag to Crush, axe handle to the back of Jannetty. Tilt-a-whirl back-breaker from Crush, back-breaker from Crush. Jannetty dodges a clothesline but runs into a chokeslam, Jannetty fights back on his knees before Crush tags Smash. Bear-hug from Smash, Jannetty escapes for a sunset flip but Smash punches Jannetty in the head. Tag to Crush, hard Irish whip to the buckle. Whip to the ropes, Jannetty ducks the clothesline and pulls Crush down by the hair.

Tag to Michaels, right hands and a flying tackle. Dropkick to Crush, right hands to Smash. Smash runs into Crush, double dropkick to Crush and Smash. Smash eats a double superkick, The Rockers are on the top rope, double diving fist drop with Crush pulling Michaels off Smash. O Connor roll from Michaels, Ax comes in for a lariat, Ax trades places with Smash for the win. The Hart Foundation and LOD come out but the decision stands.

What a fun match, The Rockers have never been hotter in the WWF. Michaels is quite the hot tag in there when he gets going, Jannetty sells his ass off inside the ring while Smash gleefully tortures Jannetty. Crush looked alright in there, I would prefer Ax in there but Crush is there for a reason whether I like it or not. Tag team division is stacked cannot wait to see more of these four teams, dug the finish for sure.

Winners: Demolition over The Rockers via Clothesline!

(WWF Intercontinental Championship Match) Mr. Perfect © W/ Bobby Heenan vs Tito Santana

Knee from Perfect to start, whip with Santana reversing for the hip-toss, arm-drag and dropkick. Perfect is on the floor and rocked, chop knocks Perfect down. Arm-wringer by Santana, Perfect knees Santana. Santana reverses an Irish whip but lowers his head, kick to the chest and clothesline from Perfect. Knee-lift, chop and right hand. Standing dropkick knocks back Santana, Santana kicks back at Perfect. Right hands, both men trading blows. Scoop slam from Perfect, stomp to the head. Reverse chin-lock, Heenan distracts the referee as Perfect chokes Santana.

Jaw-breaker to escape from Santana, clothesline levels Perfect hard. Santana is fired up, Perfect begs for mercy. Santana waffles Perfect with Perfect falling on the referee’s leg, Santana calls for the figure four. In the middle of the ring, Perfect screams out in pain. No referee for Santana, Heenan is on the apron. Santana tries to revive the referee, Flying Forearm from Santana. 1…..2…… Perfect kicks out! Santana is irate, Santana is on the middle rope. Diving clothesline, two for Santana. Knee to the head by Santana, we have a fresh referee. Perfect clocks Santana in the face, right hand. Whip, Santana ducks the clothesline and nails a flying crossbody for two.

Perfect catches Santana with a right hand, loud weasel chants fill the arena. Closed fists to the face of Santana, chops in the corner. Snap-mare into the neck-snap from Perfect, Heenan wipes the sweating face of Perfect. Santana rallies but a thrust-kick from Perfect takes him down. Perfect uses his legs to damage the neck of Santana. Chops in the corner, right hands too. However, Santana fires up, rights and lefts have Perfect stunned on the floor. Back in the ring, hair-pull with Perfect smashing into the ring-post.

Inverted atomic drop and a regular atomic drop followed by a clothesline for two. Whip but Santana lowers his head, Perfect-Plex attempt but Santana blocks. Small package from Santana for two before Perfect reverses the hold and cradles Santana for the win.

What a match, this match quality is far too high for Main Event. Perfect and Santana steal the show here with a fantastic back and forth match. Referee bump to add to the drama and Tito Santana is tremendous inside of the ring given the chance, I want more Tito now. The crowd was taken on an incredible journey with this match, so many times that they believed we would have a new champion, great match.

Winner: Mr. Perfect over Tito Santana via Small Package!

Playboy Buddy Rose vs The Texas Tornado Kerry Von Erich

The debut of The Modern-Day Warrior Kerry Von Erich, all you need to know about Kerry Von Erich is he was a star in his father’s promotion in Texas, a tremendous babyface who was hugely popular. What a great edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, Wild Kingdom surpassed any expectations I had because these matches were simply fire! The world championship match was great, the tag match was fantastic and then Santana vs Perfect was tremendous. Great edition, I would go as far as saying to seek this out! Thanks for reading and remember: there’s always another night!
