Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that takes breaks from social media like The Young Bucks! All jokes aside, I hope they are doing well and that wrestling continues to grow in 2020. For now, we are back in 1989 in the WWF! We have The Ultimate Warrior defending his Intercontinental Championship against Andre The Giant, Dusty Rhodes battles The Big Bossman & The Rockers face The Brainbusters! Let’s get it on!

(WWF Intercontinental Championship Match) Andre The Giant W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Ultimate Warrior ©

Andre attacks Warrior, choke in the corner. Warrior is caught in Andre’s hold, headbutt from Andre. Warrior drops to the floor, Warrior tries a headlock and some punches, choke from Warrior. Warrior misses a clothesline as Andre side-steps the champion. Andre stretches Warrior, Warrior breaks free and clotheslines Andre to the floor. Back from break, Andre trips and chokes Warrior. In the ring, Mongolian chop from Andre. Warrior answers with a bear-hug, Andre chokes back at Warrior. Andre’s headbutt rocks Warrior, Warrior tries a charge but Andre applies a bear-hug.

Warrior smashes down on the back of Andre, Andre holds onto the bear-hug. Warrior escapes and chops at Andre, Andre is staggering. They grab hold of one another, headbutt from Andre. Irish whip, Warrior ducks and clotheslines Andre. Andre is caught in the ropes, Warrior tries a splash but Andre boots down Warrior. Heenan grabs the championship, attempting to smack Warrior. Warrior dodges and pummels Heenan, military press into Andre and the referee is disqualifying somebody.

Warrior wins for Heenan interfering, not my idea of a hot opening match. Shocked that they had the match to be fair, I thought Andre was exclusively competing in tag matches at this stage in his career. However, Andre still bring in the fans, the fans still react and the man manages to keep the crowd invested in this match.

Winner: The Ultimate Warrior over Andre The Giant via DQ!

(WWF Heavyweight Championship Match) Hulk Hogan © vs The Genius

Hanging around with Perfect, Genius has managed to annoy everyone in the WWF and worm his way into a match with the champion. It pays to be Randy Savage’s brother, should be a fun match though with Genius being flamboyant and Hogan being utterly confused by this marvel of a man. Genius prances away from Hogan, Hogan looks bemused. Lock-up, Hogan shoves Genius down to the floor. Genius regroups, we lock-up once more and Genius is brought down again but Genius kips up, Hogan is like this motherfucker how dare this man do this to me. Hip-toss and scoop slam from Hogan, Genius is whipped but avoids the big boot.

The Genius does calculations to defeat Hogan, arm-drag from Genius who celebrates his brilliance. Genius grabs the hair and backs Hogan to the corner, massive slap from Genius. Hogan is hot, Hogan cannot believe this. Backflip from Genius, cartwheel from Genius. Hogan is furious, massive clotheslines and Genius meets the buckle. Massive right hands, Irish whip and corner elbow. Hogan floats around, atomic drop. Belly to back suplex, elbow drops and a foot rake to the face. Ten punches in the corner, here is Mr. Perfect.

Perfect sticks his gum on the championship, here is Hogan to confront Perfect. Genius chases Hogan, Hogan is dropkicked into the ring-post. Genius pushes Hogan back into the ring-post, Genius makes sure Hogan cannot make it back into the ring with kicks but Hogan slides into the ring. Rights from Genius, Genius nails a moonsault for two with Hogan Hulking Up! Right hands, Irish whip and big boot. Genius rakes the eyes and back, Hogan rakes the eyes and back. Scoop slam to the floor, Hogan pushes Perfect out of the way. Genius is thrown back into the ring, Perfect waffles Hogan with the championship and Genius wins by count-out!

An interesting match for sure, Genius has grown on me an awful lot since debuting in the WWF. The antics are very over the top and it works for the time, Hogan puts over Genius to set up a match with Perfect presumably for The Royal Rumble. Might be a bit soon for Perfect but losing to The Genius is one way to get under the skin of Hogan. Also, Perfect smashes the championship into pieces which is a great way to get heat, buying into this angle already.

Winner: The Genius over Hulk Hogan via Count-Out!

The Big Bossman W/ Slick vs Dusty Rhodes

Bossman misses a corner attack, rights and lefts by Rhodes. Rhodes goes after Slick, Bossman strikes and Slick chokes Rhodes behind the referee’s back. Slick is having words with an unnamed black woman who is a supporter of Rhodes. Bossman attacks Rhodes from behind for a second time, Rhodes meets the ring-post. Slaps from Bossman, Rhodes fires up but Bossman attacks the arm that hit the ring-post. Bossman eats elbows from Rhodes, headbutt before an eye rake from Bossman. Whip to the corner, Bossman misses a corner splash. Rights and lefts from Rhodes, Rhodes misses an elbow.

Bossman drapes Rhodes across the middle rope, Bossman builds up steam and crushes Rhodes with a leg across the back. Slick has the night-stick, Slick gets caught by the female fan of Rhodes. Rhodes takes control of the situation, rolling up Bossman due to the distraction. Bossman and Slick have words as Rhodes clears the rings of the two with his night-stick. Rhodes ask for the woman to join him in the ring.

Yeah it was fine, Rhodes can get a crowd going with ease and Rhodes still has a lot to offer to the WWF despite his age. Rhodes may not look back fondly at the WWF years but from what I have seen, Rhodes is going to knock it all out of the park if given the time inside that ring.

Winner: Dusty Rhodes over The Big Bossman via Roll-Up!

Mr. Perfect W/ The Genius vs The Red Rooster

Lock-up, shove from Perfect. Another lock-up, rights and lefts on Rooster. Irish whip, Perfect lowers the head so Rooster nails a knee-lift. Side headlock from Rooster, shove from Perfect. Drop toehold but Rooster reverses for a hammerlock, belly to back suplex from Perfect. Massive right floors Rooster, snap-mare into Perfect’s neck-breaker. Irish whip, sunset flip reversal from Rooster for two. Right hand stops Rooster in his tracks, neck twist from Perfect.

Rooster answers with a headbutt, rights and lefts but Perfect batters Rooster in the corner. Irish whip to the buckle, Rooster boots Perfect back. Massive bulldog, mat-slams from Rooster. Irish whip, back body-drop from Rooster for two. Irish whip, Rooster tries a hip-toss but Perfect blocks and nails a clothesline. Perfect-Plex in the middle of the ring and it’s over!

Decent match between the two, I do like Rooster but the push seems to be over and a distant memory at this point. Another win for Perfect who calls out Hogan during the end of the match, I enjoy Perfect inside of the ring.

Winner: Mr. Perfect over The Red Rooster via Perfect-Plex!

The Brainbusters W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Rockers

Heenan and The Brainbusters seem to be having problems, The Brainbusters are no longer champions for some reason, I have missed the title change but perhaps it was on a house-show? Anyways, Heenan and The Brainbusters continue to have a war of words, Mean Gene asks whether they can work together? Tully and Jannetty to start, side headlock from Jannetty. Scoop slam and dropkick from Jannetty, arm-drag into an arm-bar. Tully pulls Jannetty down by the hair, Jannetty kips up and nails a reverse elbow. Back into the rm-bar, Tully backs Jannetty into the corner.

Jannetty pummels both Brainbusters, apron sunset flip with Anderson preventing Tully from being pinned until Michaels comes flying out of nowhere and takes out Anderson. Jannetty scores with the sunset flip and wins the first fall for The Rockers!

Heenan has words with his boys before leaving the ring, Rockers land a double roll-up for two, double leapfrogs and superkicks with The Rockers controlling the ring. Heenan has had enough and leaves his tag team behind. Michaels and Anderson lock-up, right hands by Michaels. Whip by Anderson, Michaels flips out of the corner and nails a hip-toss, double dropkicks all around with The Rockers controlling the ring again. Tag to Jannetty, double hip-toss and elbow drop. Kip-ups and right hands to Tully, Anderson low blows Jannetty and tags Tully.

Jannetty out-smarts Tully, tag to Michaels. Shot to the ribs and knee-lift combination, Anderson distracts the referee as Michaels looks for the headscissors. Jannetty comes over but this gives Anderson control, elevated stun-gun from Anderson and Tully which leaves us with Michaels being pinned, we are tied to one a piece!

Tully wants to take advantage over a very injured Michaels, Tully gets his wish as Michaels must start the fall. Tag to Anderson, right hands from Anderson. Vicious spinebuster from Anderson, talking trash and wasting time however. Jannetty saves Michaels, Anderson tries to pin Michaels to the mat. Body-scissors from Michaels but Anderson counters with a catapult into the corner. Tag to Tully, axe handle and a cheap shot to Jannetty. Michaels is tossed to the floor, Michaels is on the apron. Tully is sent into the buckle, diving crossbody for two. Anderson is the legal man, cheap shot to Jannetty.

Front chancery from Anderson, Jannetty waffles Anderson who attempted a cheap shot. Anderson and Michaels bang heads, Michaels slips through Anderson’s legs. Hot-tag to Jannetty, right hands and dropkicks everywhere. Jannetty and Anderson are left in the ring as Tully wipes out Michaels who hits the ring-post. Michaels knocks Tully off the top rope, no spike piledriver this time as Michaels dives off the top rope onto Anderson for the pin.

My favourite tag team in the WWF at the time was either The Brainbusters or The Hart Foundation, they were spectacular on most occasions inside of the ring. This match is a lot of fun and if given more time, we could have had an awesome match because the crowds were going bananas throughout this match.

Winners: The Rockers over The Brainbusters via Diving Crossbody!

Another solid edition of Saturday Night’s Main Event, big angle shot here between Mr Perfect and Hulk Hogan. The two will clash at The Royal Rumble and this was an interesting angle for sure, The Genius is another little piece added to the mix. A fun and easy watch with squashes and an interesting angle, this was one to remember. Thanks for reading and remember: There’s always another night!

WWF Survivor Series 1989 Review

Image result for wwf survivor series 1989

Hello and welcome to a thanksgiving edition of Seanomanaic Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that loves Canada more than Jeff Hart! WWF Survivor Series 1989, big teams, big names and a whole load of fun for the WWF. Roddy Piper gets his hand on Ravishing Rick Rude, Hogan gets his hand on Zeus and Dibiase and Warrior get his hands on Andre. I love the intro, it is just such cheesy perfection. Team names galore, Rude’s Brood, 4x4s, Heenan’s Family, The Dream Team and The Hulkamaniacs just to name a few. Traditionally, I despise Survivor Series, I love the concept but a card consisting of only 30 minute plus tag team matches is not my idea of a fun time of reviewing. Let’s get it on!

The Enforcers (Big Bossman/Bad News Brown/Rick Martel/Honky Tonk Man W/ Slick & Jimmy Hart) vs The Dream Team (Brutus Beefcake/Tito Santana/Red Rooster/Dusty Rhodes)

Oddly, when it came down to Saturday Night’s Main Event, we had Akeem involved in this match with Bad News Brown nowhere to be seen, do not know the reason for the switch. Possibly injury, these two teams had a massive stare-down and brawl at the last Saturday Night’s Main Event. Santana to start with Honky, Martel tries to distract Santana. Honky jumps him, Irish whip but Santana leapfrogs, scoop slam and arm-wringer from Santana. To the ropes, Santana ducks his head off an Irish whip and Honky kicks Santana down. Irish whip, sunset flip from Rooster but two. Right hands from Honky, Rooster reverses. Side headlock and a shove off, both men bang heads.

O Connor roll from Santana, Martel counters with a handful of tights and Santana is eliminated!

Tito Santana Has Been Eliminated By Rick Martel Via Handful Of Tights!

Elbows and a dropkick from Rhodes, Bionic Elbow for two. In comes Beefcake, arm-wringer before Martel pulls the hair. Leapfrog, monkey flip is countered with a stomp to the head by Beefcake. Tag to Rooster, side headlock with a shove off. Back-breaker by Martel, in comes Bossman. Right hand, Irish whip and a back elbow. Irish whip again, bear-hug from The Big Bossman. Rooster is in the middle of the ring, this will be tough to escape. Rooster headbutts Bossman and Rooster bites his head. Bossman tags in Brown, knee lift from Rooster.

Irish whip and a chop takes down Rooster, Brown talks trash to Rhodes. Bossman nails Brown with a right hand by mistake, Bossman is sorry for his mistake. Beefcake tags Rhodes, rights and lefts by Rhodes. Eye rake by Bossman, Irish whip but Rhodes ducks and lands a massive crossbody for the win. Bossman wipes out Rhodes and Beefcake after the bell. Rhodes is handcuffed to the ropes, nightstick shots and choke to The American Dream. Beefcake makes the save with his clippers, we are done.

So, as I said, The Survivor Series can be a tough slog to sit through with tag matches all over the card and no variety but a year can be a long time in wrestling and even looking at this first match, there is so much star-power and good workers in this match, twenty-five minutes breezed by. I would have liked more time between eliminations towards the end, we sprinted through that ending but I did enjoy it, never a dull moment and plenty of quick tags to make for some interesting action.

Winners: Dusty Rhodes & Brutus Beefcake over Big Bossman via Flying Crossbody!

The King’s Court (Macho King Randy Savage/Earthquake/Dino Bravo/Greg The Hammer Valentine W/ Sensational Sherri & Jimmy Hart) vs The 4x4s (Hacksaw Jim Duggan/Bret Hart/Ronnie Garvin/Hercules Hernandez)

What I love about this early Survivor Series pay per views is everyone has a feud going with an opposing member of a team. Canadian Earthquake’s pay per view debut, Bravo and Earthquake are a package deal with Bravo being pushed solidly over the past year. The match starts with Duggan and Savage, Hercules jumps Savage after Duggan throws Savage in the ring. Clothesline and military press slam, Savage tags Valentine. Garvin avoids the elbow drop of Bravo, here comes Hercules. Clotheslines and knee lifts, Bravo to the buckle. Irish whip reversal by Bravo, Hercules hits the corner hard. Tag to Earthquake and with an Earthquake, Hercules is eliminated!

Duggan comes in to tackle Earthquake, the shoulder blocks do not knock Earthquake. Bret comes in and trips Earthquake, in comes Garvin. Garvin stomps Earthquake before a massive headlock takes Garvin to the heels’ corner. Earthquake tags Valentine, Valentine headbutts Garvin’s lower regions. Figure four is blocked but Garvin is taken down by Valentine. Tag to Savage, diving axe handle and a knee drop for two, tag to Bravo. Garvin backslides Bravo for two, Bravo drags Garvin to his team’s corner.

Savage gets in a few cheap shots before Valentine comes into the match. Valentine trades blows with Garvin, both men chop one another for what seems like an eternity. Blind tag by Garvin to Duggan, Valentine is whipped into the ropes and eats a Three-Point Stance Clothesline from Duggan for the elimination!

Duggan is waffled by Bravo and later Savage before Earthquake works over Duggan. A missed elbow drop allows Duggan to tag Garvin, Garvin batters Earthquake before Earthquake tags Bravo. Bravo eats a Garvin Stomp, Bravo rakes the eyes to stop a sharpshooter possibly. Savage tags into the match, Garvin tags in Bret. Huge pop, Savage is backing away from Bret. Eye rake by Savage, Bret answers with an inverted atomic drop, stomp to the gut. Savage tags Bravo, they lock-up with Bret backing Bravo to the 4X4s’ corner. Snap-mare into a middle rope elbow drop for two, tag to Garvin. Garvin tries an Irish whip but Bravo reverses and plants Garvin with a Sidewalk Slam!

Ronnie Garvin Has Been Eliminated By Dino Bravo Via Sidewalk Slam!

In comes Duggan, loud USA chants! Big right hands from Duggan, arm-wringer with elbows before a tag to Bret. Bret and Duggan nails a clothesline, Earthquake tags in Savage. Savage is weary of Bret, Duggan grabs Savage from the apron. Bret nails a big kick to the mid-section, shot from Duggan. Savage is stuck in the ropes, all tied up with Bret and Duggan taking their shots. Savage is released by the referee, eye rake by Savage but the knee drop misses. Back-breaker by Bret for two, small package by Bret for two.

Bret rams his shoulder into the ring-post, missing a clothesline. Shoulder-breaker from Bravo, tag to Savage for a massive Diving Elbow Drop, The Hitman fought well but that’s the end of Bret’s night.

Bret Hart Has Been Eliminated By Randy Savage Via Diving Elbow Drop!

Duggan is all alone but Duggan wipes out Savage, Earthquake and Bravo. Duggan stomps around the ring like a massive God-Damn Star! Savage and Bravo look for a clothesline, Duggan ducks and clotheslines both men. Earthquake interferes illegally with a massive clothesline, scoop slam. Massive elbow drop but Duggan kicks out, tag to Bravo. Shot to the ribs and a tag to Savage, diving top rope axe handle to the head. Duggan avoids an incoming Savage, massive atomic drop to Savage. Duggan has Savage but Sherri pulls down the rope as Duggan looks to hit a clothesline, Earthquake squishes Duggan on the floor and we have a count-out! Duggan gets his 2x4 and waffles Bravo and Savage, Duggan stands tall despite his loss.

Another fun match from the Survivor Series, such a difference a year makes. What I really loved about this is the crowd support for Duggan and Bret’s time inside of the ring. The crowd were beginning to really rally behind The Hitman and Savage backing up away from Bret was a really nice touch, it felt like a big moment for Bret and it did take a lot to put away Bret in this match. Bret continues to shine for me during this year, creating some of my favourite matches of this year!

Winners: The King’s Court over The 4x4s via Count-Out!

The Hulkamaniacs (Hulk Hogan/Jake Roberts/Demolition) vs The Million Dollar Team (Ted Dibiase/Zeus/The Powers Of Pain) W/ Virgil & Mr. Fuji

A lot of feuding coming into this match, we have Demolition continuing their war with their former manager Mr Fuji and his new team The Powers of Pain. The feud has spanned a year at this point with Fuji turning on Demolition at the prior year’s Survivor Series! We also have Jake The Snake and Ted Dibiase coming to blows once more, Dibiase had claimed to have ended Roberts’ career only for Roberts to come roaring back in typical Roberts’ fashion seeking revenge on The Million Dollar Man. Finally, we have Hulk Hogan and Zeus. Zeus who was jealous of Hogan’s top billing in The No Holds Barred Movie comes for revenge with a new ally in Dibiase to wipe out Hulkamania.

Zeus and Hogan to kick us off, we have a little shoving contest with Zeus knocking Hogan. Hogan backs up and assesses the situation, boot and right hands by Hogan. Another Irish whip with Dibiase ducking Ax’s elbow and nailing an elbow of his own, tag to Warlord. Clubbing blows by Warlord, tag to Barbarian. Jumping headbutt to the spine of Ax, Barbarian nails a shoulder-breaker, middle rope elbow drop misses for Barbarian. Warlord tags in, bringing the hammer down on Ax’s back, Ax comes back with a boot and Ax looks for a clothesline but Fuji trips up Ax. Warlord nails an elbow drop for the elimination!

Smash does not see the tag as Barbarian tagged in off Dibiase, Diving Clothesline and it is over for Smash!

Rights and lefts by Roberts, Irish whip to the buckle into a back body-drop, hot-shot using the top rope and repeated knees to the head of Dibiase. Short-arm clothesline by Roberts, Virgil is on the apron. DDT on Virgil, Dibiase capitalises on Roberts with a fist drop and a leverage pin using the ropes, Dibiase eliminates Roberts.

Hogan can hardly lift his arm, Dibiase is grinning from ear to ear. Massive lariat for two, reverse chin-lock from Dibiase. Elbows from Hogan to escape, massive double clothesline in the middle of the ring. Belly to back suplex from Dibiase but Hogan shakes it off, right hands and a big boot, Atomic Leg Drop from Hogan and we are done!

While an enjoyable match with a lot of fun moments sprinkled throughout, I cannot help but feel this match was a disappointment. First, we have Zeus being disqualified as The Survivor Series was not the big pay per view but The No Holds Barred pay per view is the big one so let’s save Zeus vs Hogan for that show, an absolute waste of Zeus in this match. Disqualifying The Powers of Pain on top of Zeus is overkill, they could have given Roberts an elimination or two in this match because Jake feels like such an afterthought in this match, should have been Roberts beating Dibiase but Roberts is a mere pawn in The Hogan game of chess. Fun to watch, a breeze but the booking leaves me thinking this could have been done a lot better.

Team Hulkamaniacs over The Million Dollar Team via Atomic Leg Drop!

Perfect and Snuka are the final two, arm-drags and dropkick from Perfect. Perfect suplexes Snuka into the ring, two for Perfect. Shoulder block by Snuka, Perfect side-steps Snuka for an O Connor roll for two, they trade pin-fall attempts with both men coming close. Snuka whips Perfect to the buckle, massive chop. Snuka whips Perfect but Perfect reverses the whip, Snuka jumps to the middle rope for a crossbody, Perfect rolls through and hooks the tights for two. Irish whip by Snuka, lowers the head and Perfect nails The Perfect-Plex, thank you and goodnight!

Not a big fan of this one, Bushwhackers and Rougeaus were cannon fodder to the big match that would be Snuka & Piper vs Perfect & Rude. I am fine with that as long as we get Rude vs Piper but we did not get that, Piper and Rude comes in the form in a few punches and both men getting counted-out! All that build-up for that? Come on, that just breaks my heart as this pay per view is just breezing by and a whole lot of fun. Perfect continues to gain heat as an undefeated superstar but damn, I was not the biggest fan of this one when all was said and done.

Winners: Rude’s Brood over Roddy’s Rowdies via Perfect-Plex!

The Ultimate Warriors (Ultimate Warrior/The Rockers/Jim Neidhart) vs The Heenan Family (Bobby Heenan/Andre The Giant/Arn Anderson/Haku)

We start off early with Neidhart attacking Heenan, The Rockers attack Haku and Anderson before Andre takes out everyone before Warrior runds down to the ring. Heenan tags in and delivers a knee drop to eliminate Jannetty.

Marty Jannetty Has Been Eliminated By Bobby Heenan Via Knee Drop!

Arn Anderson Has Been Eliminated By Ultimate Warrior Via Ultimate Splash!

Heenan is confused, where is Anderson going? Warrior has Heenan all alone, Heenan spots Warrior. Heenan pleads for mercy, Warrior whips Heenan to the buckle. Hard Irish whip, Heenan meets the buckle. Heenan tumbles to the floor, Heenan tries leaving but Warrior throws Heenan back into the ring. Flying shoulder tackle and The Ultimate Splash for the win.

With Warrior standing tall at the end of the show, I can see why this was given the main event spot on the night, sad to see Andre eliminated so quickly but as I stated, best thing for his health at the time. What a legend Andre was to even come out and do what he did, made Warrior look so special on this night. The Rockers have been a lot of fun in the tag team division, their offence is exciting and they sell their asses off for whoever they are in the ring with, I would like to see them vs The Fabulous Rougeaus or another power team like The Twin Towers again, they are just great. Strange to see the coming to the end of The Heenan Family, Heenan being the centre-piece heel in the WWF for so many years at this point and now it’s coming to an end. Heenan was tremendous selling his fear of Warrior and bouncing around like a pro for Warrior. A fun end to an entertaining pay per view.

Winners: Team Warrior over The Heenan Family via Ultimate Splash!

That was WWF Survivor Series 1989, an entertaining pay per view from what has been a great year for the WWF. The roster is exploding with star-power at this stage, every match on this card had big names rounding out each match and it made for an exciting watch for any WWF Fan. The pace was set in the opening bout with the crowd buying into Santana vs Martel, Dusty Rhodes taking on Bossman and Brutus struttin and cuttin! All matches on the night lasted 20 minutes and they were breezable with very little dull moments. Some matches had spread out eliminations which I favour as opposed to the rapid quick-fire eliminations we often see. Particular highlights include a stand-out performance for Bret Hart on his own, you could just see Bret was going to break-out sooner rather than later, another big win for Mr. Perfect proving to be a force to be reckoned with, a great debut for Earthquake on pay per view and Warrior getting his hands on Heenan. I did take issue with the lack of Piper vs Rude and Jake The Snake Roberts’ booking on this night. Roberts felt like an afterthought despite his heated feud with Dibiase and Piper getting counted-out alongside Rude left me disappointed rather than exciting for another confrontation, I thought this was the time for the two to trade blows, why tease me? Regardless, 1989 has been my favourite year of the WWF Golden Generation and Survivor Series finishes the year on a high, this is fun and easy to watch if you want to watch some classic WWF! Thanks for reading and remember: There’s always another night!

WWF Saturday Night's Main Event October 14th, 1989 Edition Review

Image result for wwf saturday night's main event

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series on the internet that is more painful than the Rusev & Lana divorce segment! Saturday Night’s Main Event before The Survivor Series! We have Roddy Piper against Heenan Family Member Haku, Macho King Randy Savage vs Jimmy Superfly Snuka, The Bushwhackers vs The Rougeau Brothers and Hulk Hogan vs Ted Dibiase! Let’s get it on!

Snuka has Sherri, Savage cracks Snuka with the purse, roll-up with a handful of tights for the win.

Solid performance from both, Savage needed the win after his loss at Summerslam. The Macho King persona is a great fit, only ramping up the delusion of Randy Savage. Snuka has been fine since coming back to the WWF, I am happy to see Snuka take a loss after only getting counted out against Dibiase. Still a superstar but it is time for Snuka to make others stars. Anyways, it was solid start to the show!

Winner: Randy Savage over Jimmy Snuka via Roll-Up!

(WWF Heavyweight Championship Match) Hulk Hogan © vs Ted Dibiase W/ Zeus

Hogan takes on his old foe in Dibiase, Dibiase tried to buy the championship in the past but now, Dibiase has bought an insurance policy in Zeus to aid him in capturing the WWF Championship. Lock-up, Hogan backs Dibiase into the corner. Dibiase reverses the hold, Zeus grabs the leg of Hogan and in comes Dibiase but Hogan out-fights Dibiase and a clothesline brings down Dibiase. Side headlock from Hogan, shoulder blocks by Hogan but Zeus trips Hogan. Irish whip but Dibiase misses the clothesline, right hands by Hogan. Clothesline in the ring for two, elbows to the head. Vertical suplex from Dibiase for two, top rope axe handle for two. Reverse chin-lock from The Million Dollar Man, Hogan elbows his way free. Shoulder blocks and a double knock-down in the middle of the ring, Hogan looks to run off the ropes and Zeus cracks Hogan in the back. Fist drops from Dibiase, top rope knee drop from Dibiase but Hogan powers out at two. Hogan is Hulking Up, right hands and a big boot, Dibiase begs for mercy but Zeus is in the ring holding Hogan. Dibiase nails Zeus by mistake, small package by Hogan and Hogan beats Dibiase. Dibiase attacks Hogan from behind allowing Zeus to stretch the neck of Hogan.

Solid match from Dibiase and Hogan, two great workers in their own right and you have the added drama with Roberts at ringside albeit briefly. This is massive for Dibiase, I feel The Million Dollar Man is getting right back on track by choking out Hogan after Zeus’ attack. We have our main angle heading into Survivor Series ladies and gentlemen. I love watching these two during this time and they continue to show just how good they are inside of that ring.

Winner: Hulk Hogan over Ted Dibiase via DQ!

Rowdy Roddy Piper vs Haku W/ Bobby Heenan

Piper has had issues with The Heenan Family, Ravishing Rick Rude in particular who believes Piper cost him the Intercontinental Championship at Summerslam. Rude achieved a measure of revenge laying out Piper on The Brother Love show with The Rude Awakening. Piper goes against Haku and the reaction is monstrous. Haku jumps Piper to begin, they begin slugging it out with Piper winning that war. Massive clothesline to the floor, Piper jumps off the apron and pummels Haku.

Piper spots Heenan, Heenan is running for his life. Piper catches Heenan but Haku manages to make the save with a clothesline. Chops and right hands from Piper, Irish whip and elbow by Haku. Shoulder-breaker by Haku for two, massive leg drop from Haku. Haku climbs to the top rope, Diving Headbutt misses as Piper rolls out of the way. Piper slams Haku’s head into the mat, right hands all around. Irish whip, flapjack from Piper and a belly to belly suplex for the win.

Abrupt ending out of nowhere for me, was expecting more of a fight between Piper and Haku. Piper’s intensity was fantastic though, this felt like a big time beatdown from The Hot Rod, I am sure they could have had the people off their feet screaming their lungs out but regardless, I was happy to see Piper in the ring.

Winner: Rowdy Roddy Piper over Haku via Belly To Belly Suplex!

Tito Santana W/ Dusty Rhodes & The Red Rooster & Brutus The Barber Beefcake vs Rick Martel W/ Slick & The Twin Towers & Jimmy Hart & The Honky Tonk Man

Martel jumps Santana, Irish whip but Martel misses the boot. Atomic drop by Santana and a clothesline, right hands on the floor by Santana. Back in the ring, Martel is begging for mercy, Martel lures in Santana for some right hands. Irish whip but Santana counters with a sunset flip for two, arm-drag for two. Martel is choked by Santana, arm-wringer by Santana. Martel grabs the hair, leapfrogs before a flying crossbody from Santana for two. Martel pulls Santana into the buckle, stomps by Martel. Martel whips Santana but ducks his head, big kick to the chest from Santana. They are trading blows in the middle of the ring, big back body-drop from Santana. Flying Forearm with Slick distracting Santana. Bossman and Rhodes are in the ring, everyone is in the ring with another referee trying to stop the action. Martel jumps Santana as we reset, Irish whip with Santana coutering. Hip-toss, Martel side-steps Santana who falls to the floor, Martel poses for his fans.

Elbow drops on the spine from Martel, knees into the spine. Snap-mare into a reverse chin-lock, Santana elbows his way out and blocks the hip-toss. Backslide attempt by Santana, Santana scores but it is a close two. Martel begins choking Santana, Boston Crab from Martel. Santana reaches the ropes, Santana uses the ropes to counter into a cover, two for Santana. Rib-breaker by Martel, Martel is on the top rope. Santana reaches the ropes, Martel is crotched. Martel meets the buckle over and over, Irish whip to the corner. Right hand by Santana, figure four but Slick gets involved again. Bossman comes in and everyone is brawling inside of that ring.

This brawl made me want to see these two settle it out one on one, Santana is one hell of a babyface when he does his thing and Martel is growing on me as a heel already. His facials are tremendous and would you look at all that stra-power on the outside, I cannot wait for Survivor Series!

Double Disqualification!

The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers W/ Jimmy Hart vs The Bushwhackers

Well I do love The Bushwhackers promos, they are as intense as The Sheephearders ones but the content is a little different. Anyways The Rougeaus have been involved in some great matches with The Hart Foundation so I am expecting some good work. The Bushwhackers jump The Rougeaus, not expecting that. Jimmy Hart is cornered by The Bushwhackers, The Rougeaus save Hart but Hart loses his pants. Jimmy Hart runs out of the arena. The Rougeaus jump The Bushwhackers, Butch eats a double clothesline. Knee drop and Boston Crab combination, tag to Jacque.

Flying reverse elbow, tag to Raymond. Jacque cheap shots Luke, Jacque nails Raymond with a high knee by mistake. Butch tags Luke, stomps and throat thrusts. Massive right, Irish whip and a hangman’s neck-breaker. Noggin knocker, Battering Ram on Jacque and a Double Gut-buster for the win! All Gimmick and no substance yet the crowd loved it! DUD!

Winners: The Bushwhackers over The Rougeau Brothers via Double Gut-buster!

Not as important as the prior Saturday Night’s Main Event but it does build up to The Survivor Series, you have Piper getting his hands on Rude to look forward to, Roberts going after Dibiase and Hogan going after Zeus. It’s all about Survivor Series ladies and gentlemen, thanks for reading and remember: There’s always another night!

WWF Summerslam 1989 Review

Image result for wwf summerslam 1989

Hello and welcome to another edition of Seanomaniac Wrestling Reviews, the only wrestling review series with more shoot angles than a Vince Russo-Era WCW Match! WWF Summerslam 1989 built around Hogan’s blockbuster movie No Holds Barred! Yes, the WWF have taken movie villain Zeus and planted in the middle of the top angle heading into Summerslam. The main event will be Hogan and Beefcake against Savage and Zeus, not the worst match on paper with Savage more than likely doing the heavy lifting and the previous Summerslam having a tag match for a main event also! We have a Wrestlemania rematch with The Ultimate Warrior against Rick Rude which should be tremendous based on the antics of Heenan and Rude’s antagonizing persona. We also have The Brainbusters against The Hart Foundation, that should be some tasty tag team wrestling right there and Tony Schiavone calls the action with Jesse Ventura, let’s get it on!

The Brainbusters W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Hart Foundation

The Hart Foundation were previously a part of my favourite opening match of The Golden Era so to see them in an opening match once more, brings a smile to my face. They have come out on top of their feud with former manager Jimmy Hart and his Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, this match is a non-title match but this could put them in the title picture. Meanwhile, The Brainbusters I have fallen in love with since the very beginning, experts at the tag scene and rightly, holding the championships. This will be good I am 100% sure of it, no doubt in my mind.

Tully and Bret start, side headlock by Tully. Arm-drags off an Irish whip by Bret, arm-wringer with multiple shots to the left arm. Tully backs to his corner, tag to Anderson. Drop toehold from Anderson but Bret slips out for a hammerlock, scoop slam on that arm. Arm-wringer and tag to Neidhart, axe handle bow from Neidhart. Anderson knees Neidhart but Neidhart is too strong, Anderson is yanked to The Hart’s corner. Tag to Bret, right hands to the left arm. Tag to Neidhart, Anderson cannot reach Tully. Neidhart drags Anderson to his corner, tag to Bret. Arm-drag but Anderson counters with a head-scissors, Anderson tags Tully.

Tully misses his cheap shot, tag to Neidhart. Kick to the hamstring, arm-wringer from Neidhart. Knees from Tully, hip-toss is blocked. Mat slam by Neidhart with more arm work, tag to Bret. Tully flops his way over to Anderson, the tag does not count as Anderson was not holding the tag rope. Tag to Neidhart, arm-wringer. Chops from Tully have no effect, Neidhart keeps walking forward. Big chop, Irish whip to the turnbuckle. Chest-first goes Tully, tag to Bret. Hammerlock from Bret, Tully tries to sweep the leg or even try a snap-mare but Tully counters with a top wrist-lock. Tully uses his head before Bret bridges up, Anderson comes in but Bret arm-drags both Brainbusters. Such good stuff, crowd goes nuts.

Bret and Tully trade blows, Tully loses that war rolling to the floor. Tully tags Anderson in the ring behind Bret’s view, massive clothesline by Anderson. Anderson misses a middle rope splash, Neidhart and Tully are in the ring too. The Hart Foundation stand tall again, Anderson wants a timeout. I do not blame him at this stage, Heenan talks strategy with the champions. Bret punches Tully back into the ring, Tully is tripped by the leg. Stomp to the mid-section from Bret, tag to Neidhart. Irish whip to the corner, Tully is thinking middle rope crossbody. Neidhart counters with a bear-hug, Anderson smacks Neidhart hard. All four in the ring, Anderson knocked to the apron. Bret whips Neidhart to corner splash Tully but Anderson pulls Tully out of the way.

Advantage: Brainbusters! Neidhart clutches his ribs as Tully and Anderson go to work. Camel clutch from Tully, Neidhart is on his feet with Tully on his back but the tag has been made to Anderson. Neidhart is taken down, Irish whip and a gut shot from Anderson for two. Boot to the head, Neidhart meets Tully’s knee. Tag to Tully, rights and lefts. Tag to Anderson, Neidhart begins fighting back. Neidhart and Anderson smash heads in the middle of the ring, Neidhart whips Anderson off the ropes, Bret drives the knee into Anderson’s back.

Neidhart tags Bret, here comes Bret. Irish whip to the buckle, back elbow and scoop slams to Brainbusters. Anderson eats a dropkick, scoop slam to Tully. Middle rope elbow drop, suplex from Bret. All 4 men are brawling again in the ring, Bret clotheslines Tully. Neidhart sends Anderson to the floor, inverted atomic drop from Bret. Anderson runs into the ring-post, Neidhart nails his slingshot shoulder block. Neidhart slams Bret onto Tully, Nedihart is with the referee and Heenan, Anderson nails a middle rope axe handle and rolls on top of Bret for the win.

Very good tag team match, loved the beginning with Bret out-wrestling the heels with some great wrestling. Loved Tully and Anderson’s psychology, they just work so well together and work the tag team match to perfection. Always in the right places, always making the babyfaces look like stars and always cheating throughout the entire thing. Tully’s strut is one of my favourites in wrestling, the cockiness is off the scales. I want more of these two going at it, more heat and more babyface Bret in peril.

Winners: The Brainbusters over The Hart Foundation via Axe Handle!

Dusty Rhodes vs The Honky Tonk Man W/ Jimmy Hart

What a WCW feel to this pay per view, here is The American Dream in his pay per view debut. Dusty back drops Honky and teases the elbow, Honky powders. Arm-wringer from Dusty, Dusty messes with Honky’s hair. Atomic drop and Bionic Elbow to Honky, ten punches in the corner. Dusty stretches the leg of Honky, boot to the head by Honky. Side headlock with closed fists before Dusty nails Honky with fists of his own. Jimmy Hart grabs Dusty’s leg, Dusty gives chase but leaves his megaphone behind to Honky.

Megaphone to the ribs, Honky covers but only gets two. Stomps and right hands from Honky, Jimmy Hart chokes Dusty on the apron. Sleeper from Honky, Dusty manages to escape but a well-placed knee from Honky keeps The Dream down. Another sleeper but Dusty is wriggling free thanks to the cheers from the crowd, shots to the ribs. Scoop slam, Honky dodges the elbow. Back into the chin-lock, Dusty pushes Honky to the corner. Shoulder thrusts by Dusty but Honky pokes the eye, right hands from Honky with Dusty firing back. Dusty begins jabbing Honky, Irish whip to the corner but Dusty misses the splash.

Honky hurls Dusty into the referee, Honky is asking for his guitar. Jimmy Hart is going to crack Dusty, Jimmy swings and Jimmy misses! Honky is walloped over the head with the guitar, Dusty seizes his opportunity and delivers a massive Bionic Elbow to the heart of Honky. 1…2…3! Dusty is victorious!

Enjoyable if not a bit too long, I enjoyed Dusty’s antics with Honky being the perfect heel to deal with The American Dream. Dusty should be going over easy on Honky but Honky got a lot of offense in this one and those chin-locks seem to stretch on for quite some time but the finish was some good old cheese and I enjoyed it immensely! Trim the fat a bit and this could have been a wonderful pay per view debut for The American Dream!

Winner: Dusty Rhodes over Honky Tonk Man via Bionic Elbow!

Mr. Perfect vs The Red Rooster

Perfect enters a shoving contest with Rooster, side headlock with a clean break from Perfect. Arm-drag from Perfect, hip-toss too for good measure. Fireman’s carry from Perfect, right hand from Rooster. Perfect is shocked, side headlock by Perfect. Leapfrog and bridges, scoop slam but Perfect counters and gets a close two. Stomps from Perfect, standing dropkick with Rooster dropping to the floor. Rooster seems to have hurt his leg badly, eye rake and Perfect is thrown to the floor. Lots of stalling, Perfect-Plex easy as that and it is over. DUD!

Winner: Mr. Perfect over The Red Rooster via Perfect-Plex!

The Rockers & Tito Santana vs Rick Martel & The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers W/ Slick & Jimmy Hart

Martel and Santana broke up as a tag team as Martel abandoned Santana in their Wrestlemania match with The Brainbusters. Santana and Jacque to begin, Jacque wants this handshake badly, lock-up between the two. Jacque grabs the hair, The Rockers are not happy so we have a double hip-toss followed by Team Santana nailing dropkicks to clear out Team Martel. Jacque and Jannetty are the legal men, Jacque misses a middle rope crossbody with Jannetty nailing a right hand before Raymond distracts Jannetty. Raymond nails a massive thrust-kick before Martel tags in, Michaels is with the referee as Team Martel choke Jannetty.

Irish whip with Martel leap-frogging Jannetty, Jannetty nails a dropkick. Tag to Santana, Martel dives out of the ring, tagging Raymond. Side headlock by Santana on Raymond, leapfrogs before a right hand by Santana. Two for Santana, side headlock from Santana. Jacque grabs Santana’s foot off an Irish whip, Raymond nails a big dropkick. Tag to Jacque, double elbow from The Rougeaus.

Martel is in, double stun-gun with Martel dancing around the ring. Martel is furious with the fans for their chants, tag to Jacque. Martel is the legal man, Santana fights back but Jacque stops Santana’s offense. Martel looks for a corner splash, Santana counters with a sunset flip for two, vicious choke from Martel to maintain control. Back-breaker from Martel, tag to Raymond who applies a Boston crab. Jacque splashes Santana behind the referee’s back. Tag to Jacque, abdominal stretch to Santana.

Raymond and Jacque allow Martel to keep control, Jacque is the legal man. Missing a clothesline, Jacque eats a flying crossbody for two. Santana is very worn down at this stage, tag to Raymond who drives his feet into Santana’s face. Sunset flip by Santana off an Irish whip, two with Raymond clamping on a reverse chin-lock, tag to Jacque. Flying reverse elbow from Jacque for two, tag to Raymond.

Jacque nails Raymond by mistake with a flying knee, Santana is looking for the tag. Tag to Martel and a tag to Michaels, right hands by Michaels. Irish whip and a back body drop, shot to Raymond. Irish whip and massive dropkick, suplex from Michaels. Michaels is climbing high, diving fist drop. Tag to Jannetty, assisted splash. Jacque elbows Martel by mistake, Team Martel are Irish whipped into one another, Flying Forearm by Santana on Martel. Jannetty as Jimmy Hart but Jacque dropkicks Jannetty, O Connor roll by Jacque but Jannetty reverses! However, Martel is the legal man, clothesline and Team Martel steal this win.

Wow, that was an awesome six-man tag team match. The build up for that hot-tag to Michaels was tremendous, the foreigner gimmick is alive and well with The Rougeau Brothers, so antagonizing and the crowd love seeing them get dismantled. Santana vs Martel has the makings of a great feud with all the attention they gave it in this match. The crowd erupted for that flying forearm, that was just so much fun. I think this could be shaping up to one of my favourite pay per views of The Golden Era. An hour past and I have been loving this Summerslam!

Winners: Rick Martel & Rougeau Brothers over The Rockers & Tito Santana via Clothesline!

(WWF Intercontinental Championship Match) Ravishing Rick Rude © W/ Bobby Heenan vs The Ultimate Warrior

It all began at The Royal Rumble in The Super Pose-down, Rude being out-classed by Warrior was simply too much. Rude attacked Warrior which set them on a collision course for Wrestlemania. Rude would emerge victorious thanks to Heenan holding down Warrior’s feet for the three-count. Piper shows Rude his ass, Rude is going nuts. Here comes Warrior with a massive German suplex, flying shoulder block and Warrior is calling for the finish. Military press slam, The Ultimate Splash and Warrior is your new WWF Intercontinental Champion.

That was a lot of fun from Rude and Warrior, Warrior steamrolls Rude for the early portions of the match, Rude puts over Warrior by showing fear from the get-go, terrified to lock up with The Warrior. Some good selling from Warrior too, Rude gets in his heat and riles up the crowd. Roddy Piper coming out wow, I thought a fan was fighting at first with everyone looking towards the ramp off camera but man Rowdy Roddy Piper causing Rude’s downfall was just awesome, I cannot wait for these two to lock up. God damn you WWF!

Damn that was another fun match, big characters all around in this one and all very over superstars. The WWF is so hot at this time, these are standard six-man tag matches and I just find myself getting sucked into these matches. Andre can barely move and Demolition and Duggan basically brawl with The Twin Towers but I love it, I loved everything that happened in this match was just good old wrestling.

These last two matches have slowed the pay per view down, there is no getting around it but they served their purpose. A buffer between the main event and the exciting tag match that came before, Snuka is still over while Dibiase’s selling is top notch as per usual. As a buffer match, it does its job not much more to say really.

Winner: Ted Dibiase over Jimmy Snuka via Count-Out!

Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake vs Macho Man Randy Savage W/ Sensational Sherri & Zeus

Nice little introduction from The Genius before the match, the crowd proceeds to lose its mind as we enter the main event, Beefcake gets a great reaction and when Hogan’s music hits, my goodness. Sherri’s look is interesting for sure, we also continue the one of my favourite angles of all-time. Savage’s decent into madness, the high of Wrestlemania IV to the low of Wrestlemania V, losing Miss Elizabeth through jealousy and his massive ego. With Sherri at his side, Savage wants to proof that Elizabeth never really mattered. Savage’s confidence fades as Miss Elizabeth is here in Hogan’s corner. With shades on, you can tell Savage’s thought process, it is tremendous.

Savage and Beefcake go to the floor, Hogan’s right hands do not hurt Zeus. Hogan rakes the eyes but Zeus blocks the slam. Choke by Zeus, Beefcake gets caught in the bear-hug, Hogan attacks Zeus from behind. A shoulder block knocks Hogan down, bear-hug from Zeus. Axe handle from Savage, Hogan is rammed into the corner. Tag to Savage, double knockdown in the middle of the ring. Beefcake kicks off Savage, in comes Hogan. Savage backs off, right hands by Hogan. Right hand to Hogan, boot to Savage who powders to the floor.

Zeus is in, right hands by Hogan which stagger Zeus. Zeus misses a clothesline, Hogan nails a clothesline which puts Zeus on his knees. Sherri is on the apron and Elizabeth trips Sherri, Beefcake trips Savage who had the loaded purse. Hogan picks up the loarded purse, Zeus is rocked. Scoop slam and an Atomic Leg Drop! Elizabeth waffles Sherri with the purse after the match and Sherri’s hair is cut!

This crowd is like molten lava for this match which more than makes up for a match that is all Savage, Zeus does well for somebody not trained. Hulkamania is alive and kicking which breathes such life into any main event. The psychology was top notch too, protecting Zeus like that with Zeus seeming impossible to knock down, it took Hulking Up and a loaded purse to defeat the monster. The crowd buys it and when Hogan sinks Zeus to one knee, the crowd is so loud. Elizabeth attacking Sherri was great too, Savage raving like a demented mad man was great and Beefcake did what he needed to do, he got his ass beat until the Hogan comeback.

Winners: Hogan & Beefcake over Savage & Zeus via Atomic Leg Drop!

That was WWF’s Summerslam 1989, arguably the best Golden Era pay per view that I have covered period. From top to bottom, this card was stacked. You had filler like any pay per view but it was over within minutes and it served as that buffer between the big matches and boy was their some big matches on this card. The opening match, Hart Foundation and Brainbusters, tag team wrestling and awesome, the six-man tag with Duggan and Demolition was enormous fun, Rude and Warrior with Piper’s return was awesome and the main event tag match was awesome too. This pay per view may have been the quickest 2 hour and a half pay per view I have watched in a very long time, it was a breeze and with so many stars, it is no wonder. It will be interesting to see when the likes of Flair and Undertaker come into the fold during the 90s because this roster is stacked and firing on all cylinders. My personal favourite Golden Era WWF pay per view thus far, it will be tough to beat! Thanks for reading and remember: There’s always another night!
