Hey you! Yes you with the
face! You like wrestling don’t you? Of course you do, that’s why you are here
for another review from yours truly, Christian’s favourite creepy little
bastard: The Seanomaniac. Since I finished my Attitude series, I have continued
my analysis of WWF pay per views while also providing some TNA. Don’t worry I
intend to expand to more reviews for WCW and ECW so there will never be a dull
day on this blog. So after getting my fix of TNA action, it is back to the WWF
for Insurrextion 2001. Insurrextion and Rebellion are UK pay per views which
range from mediocre to decent in quality as the WWF is not going to go all out
when it is not America. We are in the midst of a turning point in the WWF as
Austin’s heel turn is not garnering the intended reaction as the WWF fans could
not adapt to booing their hero. Austin was not giving up though, Austin had
turned heel and was sticking to his guns as The Undertaker stands in Austin’s
way. Triple H was thrown into the mix as Austin’s partner but could jealousy
show rear its ugly head? Could there be tension in The Power Trip? Strap in as
I look back on Insurrextion 2001!
Opening Promo
We don’t get a promo, we
have Regal and Vince Mcmahon arguing. Everyone’s matches have changed, Regal
did not change them and Vince did not change them but it was Linda changed
tonight’s matches. Vince cannot believe the changes and he is not happy so
Vince tells Regal that Vince is the boss! Linda is in the office, Vince
comically quiets down in his wife’s presence. Linda made some fair changes for
the WWF fans because they need to see the best (I see Linda is practicing her
Political speeches). Main event has not changed from a handicap match, Vince
shows Linda out of the room and Vince does an impression of Linda. Vince is fed
up with all the crap he has to deal with, I cannot believe the promo is still
going on, this might be one of the longest I have ever seen. Apparently, foot
and mouth disease is widespread in England at the time, Vince says it is
disgusting while Regal grimaces at the thought of it all. We have our usual UK
pay per view music as Michael Cole and Paul Heyman welcome us to the action.
Grandmaster Sexay vs
Eddie Guerrero
Good to see Sexay, think
this could be his last pay per view appearance as he was teaming with Steve
Blackman at the time due to Scotty Too Hotty’s injury. Eddie Guerrero is still
here in the WWF at this time which is another positive as both these man would
soon leave the company. The look on Eddie’s face as he walks past the fans is
priceless, pure and utter disgust. Guerrero jumps Sexay, reverse elbow by
Latino Heat, snapmare and a foot to the face. Eddie tries on Sexay’s glasses
before tossing them into the crowd, Sexay is on his feet and powerslams Eddie.
Sexay dropkick finds the mark, baseball slide and dance by Sexay.
Too much taunting as Eddie is in and Eddie dances comically. Kicks to the ribs by Latino Heat who says screw you, Sexay rolls up Eddie for two and Eddie explodes with a clothesline. Enzuigiri by Sexay, big back body drop and a clothesline. Eddie is hot shotted into the turnbuckle, more dancing and then a superkick by Sexay. Two and a half by Sexay, Sexay attempts a powerbomb, Sexay scores even though he almost fell over.
Sexay climbs to the top, leg drop misses as Eddie dodges at the last second. Eddie takes his time, no Frog Splash as Sexay throws Eddie to the mat, Sexay misses a splash in the corner and Eddie uses the ropes for leverage in a La Magistral pin for the win. Basic match, Eddie was entertaining mocking Sexay but there was not a lot to this match.
Winner: Eddie Guerrero
over Sexay following a La Magistral!
Triple H Promo
Triple H claims Taker has
no chance in their match tonight as Austin and Triple H are going to tear apart
The American Badass.
The Radicalz vs The Holly
Cousins
Terri changes the match
to not be a 6-man tag but rather a regular tag match as Terri could not find
any gear in terrible London. Perry Saturn had been concussed by The Acolytes in
storyline but Saturn was being punished for roughing up a jobber on Jakked.
Saturn’s new gimmick involved Saturn being a little strange like talking to a
mop and pretending to be a Dudley (No Moppy as of this show though).
Molly jumps Terri and Giant swings her while Hardcore and Perry start off the match, Crash is legal and we see a big clothesline on Perry. Perry belly to belly suplexes Crash, Malenko is in but Crash powerslams Malenko. Hardcore is legal, Saturn smashes Hardcore with a clothesline. Malenko scoop slams and stomps Hardcore before tagging in Saturn. Brainbuster by Saturn, two count for Perry. Reverse chinlock by Saturn, Saturn misses an elbow from the top, back body drop by Hardcore (think it was an Alabam Slam attempt).
Crash gets the hot tag, headscissors takedown on Saturn, DDT on Malenko. Saturn recovers to clothesline Crash, hurricanrana by Crash on Saturn from the top rope. Bulldog by Crash, Terri and Molly catfight in the ring. Hardcore has Molly, Terri and Malenko have one another and in the chaos, Saturn nails his finisher on Crash which is the Three Handled Moss Covered Family Credenza. Another fine match, neither team was a big deal at the time so it was good that they could keep the crowd’s attention.
Winners: The Radicalz
over The Holly Cousins following A Three Handled Moss Covered Family Credenza!
Regal Promo
Regal did all the press
in England and autograph signings, it is nice to see Regal having a good time.
Regal also claimed he would be knighted soon enough as he will have a great
reception from his fans. Big Show was meant to face Test but Test had been
destroyed by Big Show so Show will face another opponent!
Big Show vs Bradshaw
Show runs down pathetic
England (Yes good Show be that heel that you want to be!). Show explains Test
is a coward and that Show should be announced the victor. Test enters the arena
with busted up ribs and it looks like Test is going to fight Big Show. Show
keeps calling Test a coward, really hammering home that point aren’t we Show?
Test makes his best disgusted face and tries battling Show, Test battles
bravely but Show is too strong and Test is too banged up to fight through the
pain. Show sidewalk slams Test and Test squirms in pain as Show drives knees
into his back.
Final Cut by Show, the referees tend to injured Test, Show runs his mouth and well, a certain Texan is willing to answer Show’s challenge. Big hoss fight ladies and gentlemen, Bradshaw and Show hammer one another with rights and lefts. Big Show clubs Bradshaw and throws him into the ring, Bradshaw clubs Show in the ring. Sidewalk slam by Show, chest chops by Show. Paramedics tend to Test who is holding his ribs, Show continues to dominate Bradshaw.
Bradshaw bravely battles Show but Show is too strong, scoop slam, Show misses an elbow, Bradshaw is going high risk, shoulder block floors Show.
Could be Chokeslam, Bradshaw blocks by hanging onto the ropes, Show knocks Bradshaw to the floor. Big clothesline by Show, Show has a chair, the referee is down due to Show. Show spots Test and attacks the injured superstar, Test is in the ring. Show grabs the chair, Test Big Boots Show and the chair hits Show in the face. Clothesline from Hell and Bradshaw escapes with the win. Another decent match with Show getting too cocky and paying for it with Test helping Bradshaw win. Poor Show, he was not doing well since returning at Royal Rumble.
Winner: Bradshaw over Big
Show following a Clothesline From Hell!
Austin Promo
Austin is interviewed by
Coach, Austin’s eye is messed up as Undertaker tossed him through a window.
Austin vows to end Taker’s career in crappy England.
(Four Team Elimination
Tag Match) Edge & Christian vs The Dudley Boyz vs The Hardy Boyz vs The
X-Factor
These teams have a random
match on the card as the tag team titles are owned by The Power Trip. Credible
and Bubba start us off, hiptoss and scoop slam by Bubba. Tag to Matt by Justin
Credible, Bubba is tagged by Christian, lockup with Matt having the side
headlock. Dropkick by Christian on Matt, side effect by Matt. Double stomps by
Jeff & Matt, Christian clubs Jeff and tags Edge. Crossbody by Jeff on Edge,
Edge knees Jeff and tags X-Pac.
Headscissors by Jeff, tag to Matt. Hardys floor X-Pac, X-Pac fakes an injury and Credible makes Matt wish he was a women by destroying Matt’s balls off the ringpost. Bronco buster by X-Pac on Matt, Credible is legal before a quick tag to X-Pac. Matt nails a leaping clothesline on X-Factor, Jeff wipes out X-Factor and Edge & Christian. Match breaks down with Jeff missing a poetry in motion on X-Pac. Twist of Fate on X-Pac and a Swanton Bomb by Jeff. X-Factor are eliminated!
X-Factor manhandle Matt
and Christian nails Jeff with The Unprettier. The Hardy Boyz are eliminated!
Flapjack on Christian, D-Von roughs up Christian. Powerslam for a two count for
D-Von, ten punches in the corner by D-Von. Edge hangs up D-Von and Christian
nails a modified backbreaker on D-Von. Tag to Edge, dropkick by Edge for a two
count. Christian is legal, stomps to the back, D-Von hammers away on Christian
but Edge & Christian distract Bubba and pummel D-Von. Hard Irish whip to
D-Von, D-Von fires up but Edge drop toeholds D-Von while tagging Christian.
Quick tag as D-Von is in trouble, Edge perches D-Von on the top turnbuckle for a superplex, D-Von blocks and slams Edge face first and D-Von comes flying out of the corner with a clothesline. Christian distracts the referee so Bubba’s tag is not seen, Christian chokes D-Von. Christian is dropped by D-Von’s Saving Grace, Bubba gets the tag, clothesline to Edge & Christian, big back body drop to Christian and a sidewalk slam to Edge, Bubba Bomb on Christian and Edge staggers into a What’s Up? Headbutt.
Dudleys grab a table, they block a baseball slide and toss Christian into the ring. Edge saves Christian and Bubba does not see Rhyno coming to ringside, Rhyno Gores Bubba and Edge & Christian escape with the win. Rhyno has the table but here comes Spike, Spike Dudley Dogs Edge and it is not good news for Rhyno. 3D through the table by The Dudley Boyz. That was a good match when it came down to two teams, not a fan of one elimination and more eliminations immediately, I just don’t get it why they have like a brawl for a long time and suddenly, everyone is eliminated. Apart from that, good match when there was only two teams.
Winners: Edge &
Christian over Everyone Else due to Survival!
(Best Two out of Three
Falls Match) Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit
Instead of seeing this
match, RTC members of Ivory & Stevie Richards make their way to the ring.
Richards laments the crowd for Page 3 nude girls on newspapers (Cannot fault
Richards on that one). Richards is censoring the ladies battle royal, the royal
is cancelled according to Richards. Jacqueline comes down to the ring, Trish
Stratus comes down to the ring and we also have Lita who is easily the most
popular of all the women. Ivory calls the women “slappers” which is English
slang for sluts/whores. Lita and Jacqueline flapjack Ivory, Trish joins in and
Ivory is stripped and humiliated.
Richards is not happy with these changes so Richards grabs the microphone and cuts a promo. Trish shows off to Steven, Steven cannot control himself around Trish. Massive low blow to Stevie who is humiliated by losing his pants. DDT by Jacqueline and a Lita Moonsault for good measure. Fun segment for the fans and I think after this RTC were done as a unit and things would be tough for all the former members.
Ok now to the good stuff,
Angle was not happy with losing the match at Backlash, Benoit steals Angle’s
Gold Medals. You just know this is going to be a good match, these two do not
have bad matches. Angle has time to cut a promo before stepping into the ring
with Benoit. Benoit says Kurt’s medals are in a safe and warm place, lockup and
a clean break. Angle takes down Benoit, Angle elbows Benoit in the corner.
Benoit and Angle wrestle one another on the mat before Benoit attempts The
Crossface. Angle bails to the floor. Takedown by Angle, Benoit reaches the
ropes out of an Ankle Lock attempt, Benoit counters a roll up into a Crossface.
Angle flapjacks Benoit into the top turnbuckle, Angle drives an elbow into the
throat of Benoit. Angle stomps Benoit, belly to belly suplex. Make it two as
Benoit writhes around in pain, belly to belly by Benoit. Snap suplexes by
Benoit, Benoit hangs up Angle on the rope.
Chops by Benoit, German suplex, two, three. Benoit goes up top for the diving headbutt, Benoit nails the headbutt. Benoit is up 1:0 after the diving headbutt.
Benoit wants Angle but
referee Tim White insists there must be a break, Angle bundles Benoit to the
floor, Benoit is rammed into the steel steps and barricades. Angle props Benoit
on the top rope, belly to belly from the second rope, two count for Angle. Back
suplex by Angle for another two count, sleeper hold by The Olympic Hero. Benoit
momentarily stops Angle but Benoit is drilled with a belly to belly suplex by
Angle. Benoit reverses a back suplex into a pin by falling on Angle, two count
for Benoit. Angle is aggressive, stomping and punching Benoit, small package
for a two and a half for Benoit.
Benoit fires back with chops on Angle, Angle chops Benoit but Benoit is battling back until a rake to the eyes stops The Crippler. In desperation, Benoit DDTs Angle. Benoit counters The Angle Slam, two German suplexes and a third for good measure. Benoit tries to finish Angle with another headbutt, Benoit crashes and burns. Drop toehold into the Angle Lock, Benoit rolls through into a Crossface, Angle rolls through but Benoit catches Angle with an inside cradle.
Clean sweep for Benoit as Angle is cracking at the thought of where his medals are. Good match from these two, even taking it easy are so much better than everyone else. Benoit reveals the medals were down Benoit’s pants. Anyways, yeah blew away anything that went before them on this night.
Winner: Benoit over Angle
following Two Straight Falls
(Queen’s Cup Match)
William Regal vs Chris Jericho
Regal does not like
Jericho’s loud mouth so Regal used his power as Commissioner to punish Jericho.
Jericho won at Wrestlemania while Regal was victorious at Backlash. The feud
ends tonight as these two battle in this match. Lockup. Side headlock by Regal,
Jericho takes the arm and drops Regal to the mat. Kip up by Regal, Jericho
hammers Regal. Side headlock by Jericho, Regal counters until a shoulder block
by Jericho. Elbow to the head of Regal, Regal powders and dodges a baseball
slide.
Jericho chops Regal and drops the Commissioner onto the barricade. High Crossbody for a two count by Y2J, kicks in the corner by Jericho. Regal rolls Jericho and prevents the Walls of Jericho with a nasty punch to the head. Jericho is tossed into the ringpost, Regal knees, kicks and punches the arm of Y2J. Regal boots Y2J in the face, Regal taunts for too long though. Frankensteiner by Jericho, cover and a two count. Slingshot by Regal, beautiful German suplex by the home country hero. Knees to the face by Regal who waves time and time again to his “adoring“ fans. Chinlock by Regal, we also see Regal working the camera with the best facials in the WWF at this time. Elbow by Regal which cuts Jericho off, quick cover and a two count. Regal rams Jericho’s head into the apron, Jericho spills to the floor.
Jericho is in the ring, unloading on Regal, sunset flip and a two count for Y2J. Regal clotheslines Y2J and locks in a cobra clutch like manoeuvre on Jericho who is fading fast. Jericho raises his arm before it drops for a third time. Back body drop by Y2J, roll up gets two for Y2J. Regal uses the ropes to tie up Y2J, cheap shots by the Commissioner. Regal lands a vertical suplex for a two count, another stretch on Jericho by Regal, so many rest holds I don’t know if I can last. Forearm shots by Regal are blocked, Regal is launched into the corner, knees to the face by Regal but Jericho fires back with an enzuigiri. Referee Teddy Long reaches a count of nine, both men stagger to their feet, chops by Y2J.
Clothesline by Jericho, missile dropkick and a two count for Jericho. Flying forearm by Y2J, Jericho blocks The Regal Cutter. Facebuster but Regal counters The Lionsault, huge powerbomb by Regal but it is not enough to put away Jericho. Jericho rolls through a German suplex for a Walls of Jericho. Jericho makes Regal tap out in this match.
Regal’s matches are so weird to me, I love every movement he makes but his offence, cut-offs and transitions are so subtle that it elicits no response from the audience. It really is hard to rate his matches as I like what I see but on the other hand, it could be considered boring. For this match, they were simply going through the paces and it was fine. Regal bashes Jericho with the trophy and celebrates after the match.
Winner: Jericho over
Regal following a Walls of Jericho!
(Handicap Match for WWF
Championship) Stone Cold Steve Austin © & Triple H vs The Undertaker
The Power Trip held all
the gold, Austin was doing everything within his power to make the fans hate
him as champion. They had brutalized Team Extreme, Kane and Undertaker.
Undertaker threw Austin through a window so that explains the scar above
Austin’s eye. Lillian announces that Undertaker can only win the championship
if Austin is pinned. Taker eyes up his two opponents, puts his hands on his
hips and grabs a chair from ringside.
The Power Trip bail as Taker now controls the ring. Similar start to the match at Backlash with Triple H jumping Taker, Austin joins in and they pummel The Deadman in the corner. Stomps in the corner, double clothesline misses and Taker takes down both men. Boot to Triple H, sidewalk slam on Austin. Taker sets up for The Chokeslam on Austin but Triple H pulls out Undertaker. Not happy with The Game, Taker proceeds to beat The Game up the ramp.
Austin protects his partner. Austin attempts a piledriver and fails as Taker drops the champion on the ramp. Triple H drags Taker ringside, Triple H eats the barricade. Taker redecorates at ringside by stripping the announce table of all its fancy gadgets. Big back body drop in the ring by Taker, they have walked away from the table so what was the point of the setup? Old School in the ring for a two count, elbows to the face of The Game. Bit of a rough segment here as Taker and Triple H have a miscommunication which leads to an awkward DDT by Undertaker. Knee to the head by Triple H as Austin saves his partner.
Stomp by Austin to the lower abdomen of The Deadman, body shots and shots to the face by The Rattlesnake. Lou Thesz Press by Austin and an elbow by Stone Cold, make it two. Taker blocks the third for A Chokeslam but The Game saves his partner, the unfair advantage is screwing The Deadman. Malfunction at the junction as Taker and Triple H are down. Stephanie distracts Earl Hebnar while Austin nails Taker with a chair. Triple H crawls into the cover for a two count, Austin is furious. Triple H rams Taker into the ringpost, Austin chokes Taker with his boot back in the ring.
Triple H is legal, right hands by The Game but Taker is firing back with rights and lefts. Taker is cut off by a sleeper, Triple H uses the ropes for extra leverage. Taker survives the sleeper, huge leaping clothesline. Austin is legal, sleeper by The Rattlesnake, Taker reverses the sleeper but Austin counters with a back suplex.
Austin misses a second rope elbow as Taker scores a body blow. Taker cannot capitalize as Austin knees The Deadman in the gut, Triple H receives the tag. Taker is able to knock down The Game after The Game misses an elbow from the top rope, Austin re-enters the match. Taker corner clotheslines both Power Trip Members. Both Austin and Triple H are send crashing to the floor. Taker pummels Austin by the announce table, Undertaker Chokeslams Triple H through the announce table so that buildup minutes ago was not wasted.
Taker counters The Stunner in the ring, Stephanie distracts the referee so Austin can low blow Taker who attempted a Chokeslam. Nothing can save Austin the second time though, Chokeslam to Austin. Triple H makes the save at two and a half, way to no-sell that table bump Helmsley. Taker counters The Pedigree, Triple H is catapulted into Austin. Triple H nails a facebuster and a clothesline to floor The American Badass. Vince has seen enough so he comes stomping and a marching to the ringside area.
Vince has a chair but he whacks Triple H by mistake. Chokeslam to Vince and Triple H. Taker pins Triple H to win the match. Undertaker Chokeslams Austin after the match and beats The Power Trip and Vince with a chair. Decent match with a happy ending to send the fans home happy. A lot of these spots we had seen in the Backlash match so it was like a mirror match of that. Cannot really add to much more to it so I will leave it at that.
Winner: Taker over The
Power Trip due to a Chokeslam to Triple H!
So what did I think of
Insurrextion? Well it was a fine show for the UK fans, nothing fancy and
nothing memorable. Angle vs Benoit was easily the best match of the night, you
got to see a lot of the WWF superstars in action except Kane so it was a good
night, the ending would have sent the fans home happy and that’s the most you
can ask for from a show like this so yeah, it was fine.
